Just to play devils advocate... To force another car off the track, you would surely have to force that car beyond the limits of the track – i.e. all four wheels of the track. Fernando clearly had space to have 2 wheels inside the white lines, and hence wasn't forced off the track. Comments?

Rules state you have to leave room for a whole car.

No they don't – again, the "you must leave 1 car width" rule is in regards to returning to the racing line after defending, and was not the rule vettel was penalised under here. He was penalised under the normal rules about not forcing cars off the track ever.

Just to clarify to everyone, this is the rule vettel was penalised under:

16) INCIDENTS
16.1 "Incident" means any occurrence or series of occurrences involving one or more drivers, or any action by any driver, which is reported to the stewards by the race director (or noted by the stewards and subsequently investigated) which :
a) Necessitated the suspension of a race under Article 41.
b) Constituted a breach of these Sporting Regulations or the Code.
c) Caused a false start by one or more cars.
d) Caused a collision.
e) Forced a driver off the track.
f) Illegitimately prevented a legitimate overtaking manoeuvre by a driver.
g) Illegitimately impeded another driver during overtaking.
Unless it was completely clear that a driver was in breach of any of the above, any incidents involving more than one car will normally be investigated after the race.

This is not, and does not apply:

20.3 More than one change of direction to defend a position is not permitted. Any driver moving back towards the racing line, having earlier defended his position off‐line, should leave at least one car width between his own car and the edge of the track on the approach to the corner.

Does seem a bit farcical. Vettel followed the racing line and would have had to lift mid corner to take a tighter line there. If Alonso had the pace he should have gone to the inside like everyone else.

Really hope that Perez is able to catch them and ruin the party
