Vodafone McLaren MP4-27 Mercedes

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Look at an aircraft wing (in reverse) It creates lift, even when the plane is flying level. I presume that 'camber' refers to the amount of curvature. The greater the curve, the greater the downforce.
except that the flap doesn't have a curve. Like beelsebob said, it's flat. The main plane indeed is curved. Well if that was what pierce89 meant with camber anyway (weird of using a term ussually applied for the angle of the wheels here for a wing).
Not quite such weird use really, it's a pretty standard term when referring to an aerofoil. Hope the below link clarifies the matter:

That helped! Thanks alot :D.

Wouldn't the outer elements help with flow over the tyres?
I would bet that the inner R cascades are there partly (or even mostly) to condition flow for the back of the car, while the outer ones are simply there to try and use the air as hard as possible before it hits the mess the tyre creates.
I believe the outer cascades are also used to produce front downforce, as wel as minimal airflow diverting to the back. The cascades certainly are there to keep airflow away from the wheels, not only because it creates drag (like pointed out the cascades probably produce more drag then a exposed wheel), but more importantly the wheel, that is exposed, creates bigger and more vortices, which is bad for airflow to the back.

Yet we see a trend toward fewer cascades at other teams in recent races.

At high speeds there is a high pressure pocket in front of the wheel. That pocket deflects the air over the tyre by itself. The cascade is not needed anymore since you don't need that kind of down-force and drag along with it.

No we do not.

The few teams that did in this and last race are doing it to reduce the drag for the straights of Monza (And Belgium), not because it is superior in any way

They save it till end of the season when it makes sense logistically.

Sam Michael asserted earlier that McLaren would bring upgrades to Hungary and Spa, then a Monza specific package, and then another upgrade to Singapore.

I would like to see some sort of DDRS or passive F-dut but these have sure proved either usless or difficult so I'll trust their expertise & knoledge here and be happy with what ever direction they choose
