Mercedes AMG F1 W03

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

The wing is too opened up. They need to tighten up the end-plates. Make the vertical elements closer together.

With regard to the front wing, a few commentators have talked about the W03 running with less front wing downforce than one would expect, probably try to balance it with weak rear downforce. John Watson and Gary Anderson were talking about it just now on FP1 commentary.

Brilliant :D

They wasted so much free practice time running this device and so much resources to fine tune it -.-
Just like the DDRS or the passive DRS on the W01 or W02 (can't remember) while everyone was using easier McLaren style solutions -.-

I bet they will still use it in the beginning of the season, just to find out after 5-6 races that its not worth it.
They said that but why Rosberg had raced it the new airbox inlet ?
Sorry, I didn't found a picture to back this statement ... maybe someone could help me with this one :D

Although I'm very disappointed with Mercedes' first three years and how this whole project is developing I should say after seeing the above pictures that we have to consider how good of the W03's basic concept is. Now even a Caterham has more sophisticated aerodynamic parts on the car but Schumi and Rosberg can still post reasonable lap times whit this beast.

I think if the development of this car would have been on track all year they would be still hunting for very reasonable points and sometimes for podium finishes.

The team definitely failed on the course of upgrading this year's car. (The matters of this rather positioned better on the sister of this topic)

Those forward barge boards look different to me - or is my memory playing tricks?

It would be a good idea but we can not assure that this will work, all they updates introduced by RB always follow a coherent process and making sure that the balance of the car is perfect. Unfortunately we cant say the same about Mercedes updates.

You mean the passive F-Duct (not DRS as I said before  )?
Here is a pic of the W01:

And a pic of a Redbull or Torro Rosso from same year:

As far as I remember everybody used the Mclaren style version with the fin and the driver activation, Mercedes used their version which I believe was not driver activated.
I may remember wrong, if so I'm sorry.

Sorry for warming up old topics, but why would you go the complicated route when you can use the simple one and invest your resources in something different which may give you more advantage?

The thing is why they spend so much time and resources on things no other does. The search for a magic bullet has poisoned their minds. They have to get back to reality.
The team runs the device, something they can run next year legally, on 1 car for several minutes in one practice session. Most teams are using P1 as a test session now. They are not dumping resources endlessly on this one thing. I don't think anyone expects the duct to be a magic bullet.

I don't know to much about aerodynamics but to me w03 FW looks so simple in comparison with others teams like McLaren or Red Bull.... All this year they used almost same FW with small differences and they didn't update car until asian races.

Same happen with W01 or w02...i don't know what Brawn can do next year.... even if he get something revolutionary after 1-5 competitive weekends they will lose again pace because others teams will bring serious updates.

There were some burns on bodywork at the lower end section of sidepods.

 classic.

Ok they going back to the issues they had with W02 and W01 -.-

I thought they finally have found the magic bullet in terms of heat resistant color... at least it doesn't change its color to look burned...

i think they repacked and slimmed their sidepods below the exhaust, like Mclaren did in Germany for a better flow.
thats why all of a suddent they burned bodywork
its an easy fix, nothing to worry about.
