You can push further (in camera) with less consequence with film than with a digital camera. The advantage of instant results and error correction goes to the DSLR though, can't exactly see your shot immediately on a film camera. Plus, there are very diverse and interesting film processes to get an effect that can't be matched by any digital camera in existence (unless of course you use software to recreate the effect, which isn't the same).
