McLaren MP4-28 (pre-launch speculation)

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Firstly, he kinda gave it away when he slipped on the rado after and said "Welcome to 2009!"

Secondly, who was going to compete in those first races? The -1.5s Ferrari? The still-struggling-without-EBD RB7? No surprise they walked it, as much as you can these days. I pray the 28 is as strong out of the box, and McLaren capitalise on it.

McLaren and capitalising, those 2 words don't fit in the same sentence.

Isn't that the point of having the fastest car at any given race weekend?

Well, yes - but the 27 was the only car you could argue was up to scratch, both the other leading teams (and Merc I guess back then) brought dull knives to a katana fight. They weren't as fast as they should have been, if you see the slight distinction.

It wasn't just a good setup that won them the GP was the point I was arguing.

Looking back at the season, you could say it indeed was not just a lucky strike. Overall, the mclaren performed well on the pirelli's when you looked solely to Hamilton. He never complained about them.

If we have to keep looking back at 2012 on the eve of the 2013 season, then here's my opinion-

Mclaren would be 2012 constructors and drivers champions if the season was ran on Pirellis 2011 sec tyres, however the season was ran on Pirellis 2012 sec tyre so no one got a handle on the tyres properly until Silverstone time-ish, so arguably the best team won.

Anyway as this is the MP4-28 thread and its Friday the 4th of January 2013 today that means its on 27 days till Mclarens launch and a launch that I'm eagerly anticipating. I'm sure it'll get the same reaction as last year - 'is that it?'

It's already pretty well established that the issue was nothing to do with tyres. McLaren would have been 2012 constructors and drivers champions if they hadn't --- up so much. Simple as that.

Yes but if the tyres were the 2011 known quantity, I dont think they would have been under the same pressure and wouldnt have snuffed it up the same.

Im not blaming the tyres, they made a great season

I honestly can't think of a single --- up that was caused by the 2011 tyres, or them being under pressure. They mostly happened while they were in a very good position in the championship.

To be fair, McLaren launch a 'concept' made out of papier mache and chewing gum. You can get the gist (U side pods, coanda exhaust or what have you) but the... thing they unveil is just for PR. If you look at it funny it'll deflate.

One interesting point to look out for, away from the technical aspect of the car is will there be any Mexican sponsors? You'd imagine Telmex and Vodafone can't be on the same car..

The Slim family (aka Carlos Slim) will be honoring its contractual agreement with the Sauber Formula 1 team (The Slim Family still hold a 49.1% ownership of the company).

He was once close to buying out Honda until Brawn came to the rescue...it would be wise to keep his fingers firmly in the Sauber Formula 1 team pie, especially if he thinks of coming in as team owner someday/team partner.

I apologise for the Off-topic, but I figure I answer the question.

Anyone got an idea whether Mclaren will be doing a Front/Rear Pullrod suspension system?
If someone said to me that you can have three wishes, my first would have been to get into racing, my second to be in Formula 1, my third to drive for Ferrari.

I surely hope McLaren knows by now what system they will be using.
