McLaren MP4-28 (pre-launch speculation)

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

I don't agree, but I don't wish to go further off topic. Anyone who wishes to debate further, just send a PM or start a new topic.

@Javert

I know that it's to early, but do you think that mp4-28 will be the fastest car at the beginning of the season? I don't count on Ferrari this year, and Red Bull seems a little behind with their design. I think that Mclaren will not wait for Red Bull Red Bull to catch them. I really think that overall Mclaren has the best development pace, because every season in the very late part, they had the fastest car whatever they are fighting for the championship or not :)

I wouldn't count on it. Just because Newey decided to cry a little on paper doesn't mean their design is behind. I bet it's just a mind game as always and anyways they had pretty much competitive car in the last part of the season and this years car is almost copy-paste with "esthetic" modifications.

So speaking about this years cars being copy-paste from last year I think the packing order will be pretty much the same. Maybe Ferrari has a little bit more to gain compared to others since their F2012 was a total sucker in the beginning of the year. It can hardly get worse than that.
So I think McLaren fans have nothing to fear. My guess is they will have the best or at least second best car in the beginning of the 2013.

To be honest, if the figures coming from Woking/MK/Fiorano are to believed in terms of lap time gain from 2012 cars to 2013 then you could run a sans-DRS MP4-27 or RBR8 from the get go and still hit Q3 on a regular basis such was their lead over the field on their day.

One would think that unless teams have been at the dizzy water over the winter break they wouldn't risk everything making a bold statement with their one-year-only 2013 machines (look how that worked out for Ferrari early last year!) so the pecking order will surely remain largely the same.

As such I think the exhausts will remain similar to the '12 spec (too much agro getting a ramp/tunnel system working properly and it's not like the coanda style pipes were ineffective!). I would like to see a tidying up of the gearbox area to emulate a Williams-esque effect (with beam wings being outlawed down the line any rear diffuser efficiency is like gold dust) and further development of the late '12 FW, maybe to interact with modified sidepods and little tweaks to turning vanes etc. Evolution not revolution

Finishing races is important, but racing is more important.

I dont see how you can come to the conclusion of that when you cant see the front tip of the tub. IF it were a high nose you would see the front edge, since the tub would have been equal height. But you dont, so I asume the same height as last year.
