There are several reasons for the shroud one of which being the point at which the airflow hits the halfshaft and produces it's own downforce. Lotus adding the step at the end of the ramp changes the way in which this occurs in comparison to the Red Bull if they were not to shroud the shafts.
Interesting. What do you think about the splitter 'thing' :?: :P
I've been pondering it since I saw it yesterday ;) I've asked Mr Sutton if he can try and get a closer snap of it as I think it's worth looking at further....

In another hand, if that thing was a secret weapon, it wouldnt be exposed that way IMO. they would have camouflaged it... like to stick it to the vertical splitter for example :-" :P

Edit: cool

It is just a mount to prevent the splitter from flexing

I'm 99% sure that air passes throught Lotus' splitter. It's thick enough. By it's shape it really reminds on the DRD's part which was connecting the engine cover and rear wing on the E20.

This was my theory.

It's rounded but not very thick...

They added metal around the exhausts, like the E20

This image shows how they abide to the height limit on the floor duct due to the silver stripe. Something no easy to see on the RB.
Yea that's very clever

Good observation Owen =D>
Sorry, I can't see what you mean. What silver stripe?

I don't understand the silver stripe part either. Or the rest of that post.

Okay, so what would exactly be done and why would it be better? This is just another "oh god they are blowing things hurr durr because a part looks different hurr durr". Things like these tend to happen every year, or with every update since the invention of the F-duct in 2010.

Oh yes, and it is based on a side picture, from which you can tell the mount looks fatter? Seriously?

The mount looks a bit longer, thats all.

Best picture I have of the Tea Tray / Bib / Splitter support at the moment

Definitely seems to be too thick for the structural purpose it's intended for

Silver stripe? It almost looks like the floor is riding up onto the sidepod there.

Edit: Picture wasn't clear. I didn't see the arrow. Never mind.

I never said it is blowing something. That was strelok's assumption and I said 'why not ?'... after all the things we saw these last years ... :P
And yes it's thick and looks rounded. It definitley looks intriguing when compared to the usual anti flexing mounts.
Might be a big vortex generator. why not :?: :P

Re: Lotus E21 Renault

So, I also misunderstood your post @Owen.C93

I thought you were talking about this metal fence on the floor and not the tunel itself:

Image

Because when you put more pieces toghther then E21 sidepods make more sense.

So, let's get back to observation of Matt Somerfield:
korzeniow wrote:SomersF1 Matt Somerfield
Lotus E21 - Exhaust & Coanda Ramp with Cross-Under Tunnel, Unlike RBR the bodywork doesn't smooth into the floor behind http://t.co/uSBidpsM

Image
There are post-2009 rules stating that sidepod bodywork 50mm above the floor must meet tangential and minimum radius regulations. Hence the sharp edge of the tunnel'.

But why Lotus' ramp doesn't smooth into the floor like RBR's?

Maby there are also other rules forbiding from putting some extra aero pieces on the floor behind certain point.

Because when you look at the metal fence I highlighted on first picture, then you can conclude that by it's particular shape you are allowed to extend your ramp.

This can be best seen on picture made by @Blackout:

Image
(right click and open in new tab)

You can see the diffrences between those two solutions and how the shape Lotus metal fence overlaps the ramp shape.

Maby this enahces the effectivnes of the tunnel?
