There is a maximum amount of area allowed for the starter motor hole. So by using a separate slit Merc can have more freedom on where they put it, rather that making it exactly inline with the gearbox starter.Rikhart wrote:http://i48.tinypic.com/2ljrmgy.jpgwesley123 wrote:Indeed, it's an old trickOwen.C93 wrote: That's why it's joined by a paper thin slit.
Doesnt look like a little slit, looks like 2 separate and independent openings to me, but thanks for the clarification, I guess that interpretation makes it legal (Although I can see it working with the version ferrari have of using the starter hole and expanding it into a similar shape, not with this one, but what do I know ).

I told somewhere already, couple of low fuel runs and quick laps from Merc and people immediatly trying to find their advantages, and discover their performances even if is just ordinary starter hole. Causing ruckus here on forum just to short time between last test and australia. But i love good pointless topic, it's good entertaimentwindtravels wrote:Its beyond me!Huntresa wrote:Why are we talking about a hole that has been on the car since Pre-Season Testing 2012?
Why bother to criticize him for being curious and carry things off-topic. Besides, ALOT of pure BS gets posted as fact on here, especially concerning aerodynamics. I applaud him for not automatically accepting some explanation(even if it is probably correct) without a little more info.mantikos wrote:windtravels wrote:Its beyond me!Huntresa wrote:Why are we talking about a hole that has been on the car since Pre-Season Testing 2012?
Cause someone wanted to create a stink about something without reading the pages of this and the PY thread...seriously ppl...read before posting.

Probably used it because it works better at creating downforce for them.Anon123 wrote:Ted Kravitz mentioned on the final notebook of testing how the sides of the W04's diffuser exit projected air outwards like the Lotus. I recall one of the driver's mentioning that the Lotus was the hardest car to follow in 2012 because it created a lot of turbulent air, has Mercedes used this type of diffuser on purpose to disrupt the aerodynamics of following cars?
