I got to say I was very happy with that result. Going from 6 seconds back to 2 in 5 months with very sporadic work isn't that bad. And adding that I have a 1 element front wing which developed should give me a better distribution and a bit more downforce which I think was my main problem.

Looking at the figures, Hit-reset looks to have a very good rear end!

I reckon the front wing I had designed for my car before losing all the data to the hdd failure I reckon the balance would be much better.
Unfortunately the data loss has meant I have lost interest and just cant pluck up the energy to make a fresh start on things :|

Thats a shame.

Hi all,
An idea popped into my head, for next year would it be better for the challenge and rules for us to loosely base it around f1 regulations, for example, here is a cockpit, here are some boxes build your car in these with nose height regs and say anything goes?

That would allow it still to be f1 based but without all the extra bits which require an extremely high level of modelling precision.

Thanks

Hi Nick, i like the idea, but i think you should keep the engine and the gearbox but refine more.

A few more numbers for you:-

Added columns to show "balance corrected" aero coefficients, i.e. for all teams but one the rear downforce has been adjusted down to balance the front in a 46:54 split (For Team Furia the front downforce has been adjusted down to balance the rear). The Cd.A is unadjusted. Essentially if your car is making an unbalanced amount of rear downforce you won't gain any more cornering performance (the car being limited by the amount of downforce created at the front), but you will have to pay the price for the extra drag that the excess rear downforce brings with it). This gives a much better indication of car performance, as you can see:-

Of course; this is only 1/3 of the picture because I haven't done the 180mph case and the yawed case. In addition, you might find that it is slightly beneficial to have a bit more rear downforce than the balanced case suggests as this means you have more traction coming out of the corners.... This is most likely the reason why the Hit Rest car is faster than the Wiggles car....

Cars in red are those given penalties... I've put them in "un-penalised" lap time order so its easier to see patterns in the aero numbers....

Hi,

Interesting data we have gained, a lot of interesting data, I think this is the first time that people can make an f1 inspired design, test it and get an optimum accurate (within the confines we have) laptime of what is possible out of their very own design,

next race is italy, get your drag reduced wings at the ready :)

Thanks

looking for a bit of advice on getting info from para view..
i can see my car inside the box and have selected P from the drop down list on the left and my car is showing with the red and blue colour but just about all red.. what should i be setting the scale to to get more detail??

Is there a reason that the VTK file shows all the slot gaps on my car being meshed over? It would be good to know if they were meshed correctly for the actual simulation.

Nice to see everybody is getting their results. In my case I can see the pdf report but I am unable to get the VTK file, I get this error:

Sorry about that. Can you confirm which team? I just went through the permissions and it should all be set correctly - it might be a path issue.

Just letting you know that the upload portal for the Monza race is open - same URL, username and key. Let me know if you want me to resend.

I find this kind of competition interesting and I would be willing to participate from 2014.

But there are clearly some aspects that should be improved, such as scrutineering. Judging by the CFD pictures, some cars declared legal are not - particularly, the sidepod and engine bodywork 75mm minimum radius rule. And considering the wheelbase is specified by the common parts, the wings should be in the same location for everybody, which is not the case. Even the provided parts are not legal (for example, the front brake duct extends beyond the 330 mm radius around the front wheel center line)...

My exact thoughts. I am indeed i bit disappointed by this aspect: my car got penalised for something that doesn't give me an aero advantage, while other competitors were declared legal despite having heavier illegalities. I know it's an hard work to judge legality if done by one guy alone, but still something that doesn't make me happy... However i'm sure i'll be sorted out.

BTW, this is still a great occasion to learn and have fun. Glad I joined.

You need to remember that this is done in there spare time, the guys may not have enough time to go through all the regs and judge each car properly and email each team with the problems. We need to keep positive and people need to stop complaining because you got penalised and give the guys time to sort the problems out, im sure the rules etc will be clearer for next year! Big respect to Nick and Julien for giving there time to us all to have fun! Keep it up!

(And before people/teams start moaning at me for putting this, im only giving my opinion)
