Hamilton was 6-7 tenths up then messed up the final chicane. He said so himself.
He wasn't 7 tenths up, he was 2 tenths up.
Vettel was also green in S1 and purple in S2 in his final run but ended up 6 tenths slower than his pole lap. With the track conditions in S3, Lewis missing the final chicane was pretty much irrelevant...
Were you watching the American broadcast? Steve Matchett is a hawk with timing & scoring, and he seemed to believe that Hamilton would have had pole had it not been for botching the final chicane. --Not to take away anything from Vettel.
All due respect Cocles, but in my view you actually are taking away from Vet with these comments.
I'm, I think, like many on this forum who would prefer to see Vettle not win another championship, but the guy is performing, and quite frankly, seems to have a similar skill set to previous multiple world champs. (Ill prolly take crap for that but its just my opinion). IMO, Its not just the car or one could claim Schumacher was just a fluke - but no long experienced f1 fan would believe that. I used to think it was just the car for Vet, but I am having a harder time convincing myself of that as time goes on because he just keeps performing consistently.
Furthermore, Steve the hawk Matchett hadn't noticed that the drivers ahead of vet and ham were all extremely slower in the last sector in that final few min, so I question his timing prowess in this case. Usually he is sharper but not in this case.
As for Hamilton's comments...talking like that is no different than Mike Andretti claiming he should have won the Indy 500 three or four times if it was only the Indy 400 (he has said this exactly in interviews). Well Mike, it's not the 400 its the friggin 500 and if you can't finish 500 miles then you don't win. Period. End of story. This is racing, not grenades or horseshoes. If you can't finish the lap perfect and clean then that's your own fault, shut up, stop making excuses, and let your driving talk.
Finally, who cares if the Merc is faster in quali? They don't give out points for quali! Sure fun to watch them trying for pole, but come race day Merc is a literal moving speed bump. That said, I hope they can improve soon as both their drivers are exceptional, and certainly deserve a better race car, but this shoulda-coulda-woulda bs is just that...BS.

I take it no one else is upset about them forcing the removal of that 3" kerb?
I also am none to happy they removed the curbs. If you can't hold the line it should not be easy to just leave the line and rejoin. I'm actually tired of seeing racing lines ignored.
May the best driver and car combo win tomorrow.
