That's very useful information. The "skin" of the gearbox does seem flexible in terms of geometry but looks impractical for quick changes... unless they designed it to be changed without removing all the elements surrounding it.

It might be impractical, but imo it is the only possible option. The point here is to be able to change the pick up points of the suspension arms to the structure. You cant change the gearbox as that will give you a penalty and fixing all the possible pickup points to the gearbox itself isnt an efficient option either.

So what then can you do, create an additional, replacable skin, which has different pickup points. They probably made some gains(or maybe that is a downside) on the stiffness.

Even Scarbs wrote somewhere that the main difference between the FRIC of Mercedes and other teams interlinked suspension is that it does not use any regular components, like dampers. But of course these are too speculation, though a good one

...and F1 website proved him wrong when they drew the internals with a damper this year...

This ain't the same

the box was cf during BAR if I recall correctly - for Merc the box is Titanium alloy and the casing (a separate piece that shrouds the box and has pick up points) is carbon fiber like the Ferrari in 07 (or 06)

The news at the time reported it as an idea Costa brought with him from Ferrari, where they used it on the F2004.

Its quicker than the 5 race wait they'd have to experience between gearbox changes otherwise...you could potentially change the pickup points at least twice over a whole weekend

Maybe revised brake ducts too given the new tyres / thermal deg problems

Maybe they can manage to "crack" these tires too considering they have this extra skin on the gearbox.
It should cut down the time to unlock the tires at least.

Would be a real shame to start of so well this season and then have everything crumble mid-season.
