At Augsburg, on August 10, 1893, Rudolf Diesel's prime model, a single 10-foot (3.0 m) iron cylinder with a flywheel at its base, ran on its own power for the first time. Diesel spent two more years making improvements and in 1896 demonstrated another model with a theoretical efficiency of 75%

Ackroyd Stuart seems to have made a real 'diesel' engine before Diesel did
but as AS's company were already in large-scale production of his hot-bulb engine, they didn't see any need for change
hundreds of thousands of these cheap and simple hot-bulb engines (otherwise known as semi-diesels) were made after Diesel

all engines have rights, don't they !

It says theoretical efficiency of 75%.
The overall measured efficiency in 1897 was 26,2%! Not that bad, i would say.

Can the theoretical thermal efficiency even reach 75%? I thought the limits of the diesel and otto cycle was ~60% efficiency.

is that the 'true' Diesel cycle (heat added at constant volume) that could not be made to work by Diesel or anyone ?
or the Diesel cycle that Diesel used and diesel engines still use by design or accident (heat added at constant pressure or nearly so) ?

I was involved in a project to use a V8 Evinrude two-stroke engine in the back of a sprint/hillclimb car a couple of years ago. I've heard nothing of it recently, so I suspect it's run out of budget. The engine weighed just 80kg and could put out 500bhp, yet cost peanuts to buy. The plan was to run it with a dual CVT system and no differential. 8 silencers helped offset the low weight!

Always been fascinated by 2 stroke, always thought their abandonment was more political than anything else

On that mercury 2 stroke how is the exhaust routed?

Their block has such high bore (almost like an f1 engine)
