Ferrari 2014 Car Pre-launch Speculation

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Everything I've seen so far is presuming teams are still going to use the fw to move air round the outside of the tyres, but I yhought I remembered pat fry intimating it was a close call. I wondered, therefore, if ferrari might try going inside; obviously this seems the harder option, but it does strike me that ferrari haven't been that successful with the wider fw rules and might look to use knowledge from their more successful era.

Probably unlikely, but just a thought.

If they are only just ready for crash-testing, that means that even if they pass with no problems, they probably don't have more time to spare to produce a monocoque for track testing. Or they have been coque (geddit? ) and produced two concurrently.

There's no reason why the second monocoque can't already have been in production for a long time.

Lotus seems to be on a similar boat but yeah I don't see any reason why Ferrari wouldn't have a team who is finished on that part and just waiting on the other team to match up parts..

I don't think Ferrari would be too far behind. I would like to see a some more news on this tho this is too much speculating..

Considering the standard side impact structure the crash test should be easy to pass this year. I guess they made sure the nose will pass before going to the offical test.

According to La Stampa Ferrari passed FIA - crash test and has the car and engine ready.
According to La Stampa the team will use basic wings for the first test, the final wings are not ready.

Seems logical to do so - with ferrari having to process engine data from 3 teams, plus non-power unit mechanical aspects of their car to be tested, they'll be not having much night rest already. Complicated aero structures can be implemented once the initial fase of the data tsunami has calmed down.

Sorry for not delving deeper into the subject, but I've intercepted that Ferrari may have experimented with spark plugs with a diameter of 10 mm, which should in theory allow some advantage in cylinder and engine design?

Does anyone have more info on that? Just curious.

BTW, Juan David Barrera has worked on that Ferrari looks and some simulations:

what should the advantage be? afaik the current once are smaller than that, something like 7.5mm thread

Could it have something to do with cylinder deactivation?

I mentioned the rumor in Engine thread and apparently it goes for long, it seems to have originated from Windsor (so all the usual disclaimers apply) how got the news from Marmorini.

This is very interesting.

All unknowns regarding car design aside, does this indicate that outwash front wing is easily the way to go? Looks like the inwash loses all its energy long before it reaches the diffuser.

And isn't that first (2008-esque) front wing illegal now?

I'll be interested to see what style rear wing / pylons with monkey seat Ferrari will use.

I'm still wondering whether there may be a loophole with the exhaust exit by simply cutting a slit at the leading top edge of the exhaust housing to allow some hot gases to be blown into a tube feeding into the central wing pylons hitting either under the rear wing scoop or feeding to the floor.

What do you guys think, I cannot seem to locate the regulation pertaining to the new 2014 Exhaust housing / exit, then again I've been quite time poor in recent weeks!

Regards,
If someone said to me that you can have three wishes, my first would have been to get into racing, my second to be in Formula 1, my third to drive for Ferrari.

5.8.2 Engine exhaust systems must have only a single tailpipe exit which must be rearward facing
and through which all exhaust gases must pass.
5.8.3 The cross-sectional area of the exhaust exit at the rearmost point of the tailpipe must lie
between 7500mm and 14000mm.
5.8.4 The last 150mm of any tailpipe must in its entirety :
a) Form a thin-walled unobstructed right circular cylinder with its axis +/- 5° to the car
centre line when viewed from above the car and between 0° and 5° (tail up) to the
reference plane when viewed from the side of the car. The entire circumference of the
exit should lie on a single plane normal to the tailpipe axis and be located at the
rearmost extremity of the last 150mm of the tailpipe.
b) Be located between 350mm and 550mm above the reference plane.
c) Be located no more than 100mm from the car centre line.
d) Be positioned in order that the entire circumference of the exit of the tailpipe lies
between two vertical planes normal to the car centre line and which lie between
170mm and 185mm rearward of the rear wheel centre line.
5.8.5 There must be no bodywork lying within a right circular cylinder which :
a) Shares a common axis with that of the last 150mm of the tailpipe.
b) Has a diameter 30mm greater than the tailpipe.
c) Starts at the exit of the tailpipe and extends rearwards as far as a point 600mm behind
the rear wheel centre line.
