This system continues to be a complete farce.

Just remove it entirely please.

I mean what a way to treat your loyal members.

Seriously considering just leaving this website.

Pointless video, what a waste of my time.
Looks like a BMW... I'll get me coat.
Pointless comments in car treads well deserved.

That was the single joke I made, just 1. And that video was worthless, not worth posting at all. I had to comment because this flawed system doesn't allow me to down vote it.

AND, we still don't have an ignore feature. What ever happened to that feature request?

yeah the system has great flaws. if a post gets 2 downvotes it's no longer visable.

if a member feels attacked on their own post they'll just downvote the post as a form of revenge or satisfaction.

Diesel probably You was the one that filled the cup with with pointless comments in car treads. I wasn't down voting Yours post., but I understand others frustration. For me the car treads always been a place about details of the cars, bits, how they work.. not about do people like them or not. sorry for my bad english.

Post alike "it looks ugly" are likely to attract downvotes and also subject to removal in the car threads. Those have always meant to be about the technical properties of cars. There are plenty of other sites around to make your dislike of Formula One obvious.

As for downvotes getting posts hidden, that is indeed currently 2, but that was also set as such when there were less people able to vote anyway. I'm open to get this modified.

Also, the number of downvotes people are allowed to make per 24 hours has recently been topped off a bit, preventing unnecessary usage. If can be modified at any time if it would prove to be required.

"The voting system continues to be a farce" is hardly a valuable contribution btw and could equally attract downvotes. Argumentation, suggestions are more than welcome though.

At what rating can we start downvoting? Some of you are slacking on that.

In Car threads:
"Well this is depressing."
"Doesnt look good for Xxxxxxxx."
"Xxxxxx should just turn around and go back home."
"Xxxxxx looks slow."
"These engineers dont know what they are doing."

Technical aspects of the car and its full of garbage like the examples above. Sad, really.

Crappy and off-topic posts can be reported, the old fashioned way.
In fact, it's the preferred way, so that mods can handle them by either removal or movement to another thread.

Downvotes are basically meant to indicate incorrect information, to signal other members to treat the information with caution. And AGAIN, it is certainly not meant to be used for disagreement. If you find any such behaviour, again, please report it to the mods.

How were negative votes being abused in the past? What was the issue?

I do feel as if there shouldn't be a restriction on negative votes per 24 hours. It might make sense to limit the number of negative votes a single post can get ( -5 for instance). The reason for my suggestion is that a lot of regular members could "patrol" the forum and downvote any off-topic posts and set the tone pretty clearly to the authors. Discouraging people from going off-topic should be a good idea whilst encouraging them to think before posting.

Some areas of the forums can be voted on, others can't, like this one. This makes sense here, but in other areas it's just odd. Many people can't downvote, others can. The criteria for this is just bizarre. The first person to post a picture anybody could have sourced get's all the upvotes. Post something original, like a photo or video you took yourself, and it usually just get's overlooked.

TLDR; The whole system promotes quantity over quality. If you post 1000 average posts you are likely to get more votes than posting 100 brilliant posts.

Still you've defined the rules quite clearly, I'll just report anything that doesn't meet those rules, since I can't downvote them.

RIGHT, but I can't downvote posts I know are technically wrong, or equate to BS. But as you've said, I'll just report them.

The way people vote is sometimes irrational. Yesterday for instance I got 7 upvotes: 2 for bringing up a new technical marvel from nissan, but weirdly I got 5 upvotes for 2 "sexual-hinting" humoristic posts. I mean it's always nice to see people appreciate your humor, but the most technical pieces of information sometimes get very underrated.

It very much has similarities with elections: not the inherently best program wins, but the best packaging does.

@Diesel: Indeed, if we had wanted that nobody used the reporting function, we would have just removed it.
So have a ball and report idiocy! For the sanity of everybody else around here ;)

Perhaps still too much, but certainly less than having a post counter below your username. There were many complaints back then that it gave the impression that some users were valuable, while they were just posting a lot of crap.
