Mercedes AMG F1 W05

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Could have been over 100 if they didn't had to waste 2 hours this morning. Very reliable car and engine. I think they can now start focussing completely on setup and performance overall.
Given that FI have had a suspected engine failure, I'm not sure I'd claim 1 failure per (roughly) 400 laps is good going.

The car looks like it's the quickest and easiest to shake down of any of the major teams.

Of course the times are slow but they have the confidence to push more.

It means they have the car sorted enough to at least get them out on the track.

They seen to have removed the air pressure sensor from the nose. They are also one of the only teams not to be running an array of sensors on the roll hoop camera.

Nicos number seems to be over where it should be.

couldn't find a clear clip of the W05 making this sound [0.12 of the clip], but is does.

Can someone explain the sound difference between the Ferrari and the Mercedes engine. It sounds like traction control or the 2012 Red Bull in 2011/ 12 engine blowing or is the Mercedes engine cutting cylinders for better traction?
Irvine:"If you don't have a good car you can't win it, unless you are Michael or Senna. Lots of guys won in Adrian Newey's cars, big deal. Adrian is the real genius out there, there is Senna, there is Michael and there is Newey. They were the three great talents."

Are they allowed to set off-throttle curves to minimize turbo lag when the drivers go back on throttle? That could be what we are hearing.

I'm pretty sure you are, but my understanding was that HERS was a better way to spin up the turbo early, and get rid of the lag.

To be honest at this stage it is impossible to tell what programs they are running with. In my view (or ear) the Sauber always hisses liked that with the turbine running close to max. It is just far easier to notice in the braking zone as the turboengine was cut.

P.S: I listened now to a couple of videos made by the same guy (thanks!) and every car has the same high pitched, hissing sound which surly comes from the turbine which is spinning at a 100000 rpm towards the end of that straight. Lots of difference in the throttle applications. As said before, different programs and maps.

It would be difficult to gauge how much they're pushing just by the turbo sounds alone. The turbines would be spinning near their max RPMs as long as throttle is applied (unlike a supercharger which is RPM dependent). Excess boost will be released by the wastegate anyway. If they didn't spin near max RPM under throttle then something isn't right IMO.

The lap times are truly irrelevant at this stage in trying to determine performance. At least the W05 seems reliable so far.

How do the Flow-Vis patterns look to the aero guys here?

Could they be using a combination of both therefore creating that sound off throttle?
