RB10 and STR9 use completely different packaging. There is no way to compare them. I already mentioned it twice here in the thread. Imho there is no car in 2014 (maybe the Ferrari comes close) that has its engine sitting that deep down in the chassis like RB10. Just watch the pics in this thread. There is no visible bulk on the engine cover on RB10 where you would expect it. Even RB9 was a fatty in this area compared to RB10.Blackout wrote:I'm talking about the STR9's sidepods too not only the coke bottle. The latter is normal; not the tigtest, but not fat... The sidepods in the other hand, I mean the part that hosts the radiators, the electronics etc, is very small, low and tight. Even the bodywork around the exhausts looks very tight on the STR9. The Rb10 has much taller and bigger sidepods.

Its not a case of the Renault unit in the RB10 sitting very low or deep, its more that the Red Bull has tall sidepods and a large engine cover (NOTE: no shark fin).gandharva wrote:RB10 and STR9 use completely different packaging. This pic shows my point very well -> http://www7.pic-upload.de/01.02.14/7mz7mzi6tiw.jpg
For the rest, i agree with raymondu999.
It is and it is easily spottable. See red circles. All cars except the Farrari and RB10 have a visible bump in this area. You don't need that bump if your engine is installed lower in the chassis. A low barycentre has enormous impact in the cars handling.Blaze1 wrote:Its not a case of the Renault unit in the RB10 sitting very low or deep...
The team was cutting holes in the chassis during the test. I would say they did have some heat issues...Blackout wrote:Does the STR9 have overheating problems ? I dont think so. But it didnt run many kms anyway. We'll see in Bahrain.
The RB10 really doesn't have a bump there, but that is exaggerated due to the high Sidepods. But I don't really believe that the engine is mounted lower, because the crankcase should be almost exactly as big as on the other cars and therefore everyone mounts the engine as low as possible. (basically on the floor of the car)gandharva wrote:It is and it is easily spottable. See red circles. All cars except the Farrari and RB10 have a visible bump in this area. For me the height of the sidepods is quite similar for all the cars on the upper pic.rscsr wrote:The RB10 really doesn't have a bump there, but that is exaggerated due to the high Sidepods.
! didnt see that. Do you have some pics ?dren wrote:The team was cutting holes in the chassis during the test. I would say they did have some heat issues...Blackout wrote:Does the STR9 have overheating problems ? I dont think so. But it didnt run many kms anyway. We'll see in Bahrain.
Interesting observation.gandharva wrote:It is and it is easily spottable. See red circles. All cars except the Farrari and RB10 have a visible bump in this area. over the past couple of years, williams are using very low gear box and maybe they have an advantage over the power unit... and like other teams, they are using mercedes but williams are keen to use low (small) gear box and on their car i cannot see the bump... i don't know is there any connection with this my opinion... it's just my thought...gandharva wrote:It is and it is easily spottable. Actually, on that area, I do not see any mensurable differences. Where one has a bum the other has a horizontal surface coming from the cockpit protection.Blackout wrote:But your observation is interesting anyway.
I would say both cars are very simlar in that ragard (the shape of the bodywork above the engine around the Bull's head)
Only the STR have sidepods that taper very much backwards.

I think that is a result of other packaging considerations e.g cooling network. As has been mentioned all the engines are pretty much on the floor of the cars so can't be situated any lower.dren wrote:The team was cutting holes in the chassis during the test.
