I would normally be the first person to say testing times are irrelevant, but regardless of fuel loads, a 1:33.283 by rosberg on the soft tyres is going to be hard to ignore. By comparison that means the W05 is within a tenth of a second from pole position from last year which was 1:33.330, considering the initial impression was that the 2014 cars would be 5 seconds slower than last years.

Last year's pole was a 1:32.330

The times are still irrelevant, for the fact that this is STILL second winter test. There would still be apprehensions in every team to run at full revs, I am sure including Merc too. Once the teams understand behavior of new tyres, new energy systems, Aero optimization and gain confidence in overall package, that would be when times become relevant. Melbourne would provide first accurate glimpses of each car.

I'm not sure that's true, I think it meant perez was on course to set his best time of the day. Not the overall for the day

question:
Would like to point out that last year's qualifying 3 time was set on the mediums and at dusk when the track temperature was cooler, plus with the amount of laps being done this week the track will be very well rubbered in. Even though the Mercs are getting times equivalent to last year, can we really class them as comparable? probably not.

@Connor Hinchcliffe lets also point out that the Bahrain GP was 4 races in with some development under the skin, this is out of the blocks, I think they might qualify faster but race slower
