I believe the only part you're missing might be to suggest the 'U' in the diffuser aids the adjacent sides of the diffuser with better extraction similarly to how tuned exhaust manifold runners effect their adjacent runner in extracting gases. It's a combination of things he has said over the past few months. He said he was moving late last year and he's been very quiet around all things Mercedes, basically!
