Mercedes AMG F1 W05

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Two pages of talk about gear ratio regs was useful, but distracting from the actual car. It's now over in the gear ratios discussion

I believe the only part you're missing might be to suggest the 'U' in the diffuser aids the adjacent sides of the diffuser with better extraction similarly to how tuned exhaust manifold runners effect their adjacent runner in extracting gases. Clever design based on simple theory.

It's a nice workaround, but I don't believe it'll be a big performance differentiator.

This year's regulation states that the starter motor hole in the diffuser must be either shut or if looking from the underside it's not visible. So its actually a clever interpretation of the rules, this way you can still have it open and at the same time it's legal. Other teams just have a hinged "door" that closes after you remove the starter

Ah, my original theory was that this was the case but after asking @F1_Aero on Twitter (who I believe works for Mercedes now) he dismissed this idea.

So Mercedes will bring a new Nose to the last Tests. It will be even lower and shorter to interfere with the Front Wing even less according to AMuS.

Soo excited to see all the Updates this Week will bring.

I have been trying to work out what team F1_Aero on twitter works for haha! What makes you think he works for Merc now?

It's a combination of things he has said over the past few months. He said he was moving late last year and he's been very quiet around all things Mercedes, basically! I hope he finds himself a happy home there.

It's also great to see, that they have decided to use the slimmest of their engine cover and sidepod configurations.

So they have tested all of them and they can use the slimmest of all! That's great!

Nope still the same ones. 2 bend plates with a horizontal vane attached to the latter.
