McLaren MP4-29 Mercedes

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Is that just an optical illusion or is that a cooling vent like the Lotus has?

I looked at several side shots from AUS and the floor curls in that area but this looks different. I'm inclined to believe it is an illusion. Seems to me that would be a poor location and I can't tell if there is a channel in the floor running to the sidepod.

Edit: After looking around more I'm almost certain that is just the floor. Carry on.

Isn't the nose section a bit higher? The rule states no body work above the diagonal drawn from the nose tip to the chassis? How does this pass the test?

Wow, from one of the nicer looking cars, the MP4-29 has gone straight to the bottom of the list in term of visual appeal with this new nose. #ugly

No, you could be right; it could very well be a cooling outlet. While there doesn't appear to be anything similar on the other side of the car, the new engines and their turbo intercoolers mean an asymmetric cooling layout from one sidepod to the other isn't necessarily an "exotic" (read: unlikely) solution.

EDIT: And here you go...

Teams are given either 25mm or 50mm, or something like that, I can't remember exactly, above the reference plane to do pretty much whatever they want.

Looks like some drag reducing solution for high speed airflow. I could be totally wrong - I'm just trying to learn and understand those aerodynamic masterpieces :)
