AFAIK Santander is still a Mclaren partner (never left), though a minority sponsor in contrast to Ferrari w/c they have major backing.
It's a positive to know that they're still there. At least they'll add more color and stickers plastered all over the car :D :D :D

I find Ron's comments about not doing things purely for the sake of aesthetics rather bizarre... This being the man that insists every single floor tile in the MTC has to be exactly the same shade! Clearly they could have saved a fortune hiring Sir Norman Foster and just built some large concrete blocks to work inside instead then? 8)

As others have said, F1 as a sport needs good aesthetics, and in an era were the cars themselves haven't been all that pretty (though this years seem a step forward in that regard), the livery takes on huge importance.

Had they launched a plain car like the 29 was in the beginning, then he might have had a point, but the West tribute effort is a livery chosen for aesthetic purposes, at least for me it is! As I've said before, the disappointment stems from all the hinting at red / white / orange their marketing team has been doing.

I also note that Ron has said he reckons the era of the 'Title Sponsor' is over due to the difference between sponsor revenue and budgets, in which case, the 'base' livery matters all the more. Why not establish a 'Mclaren' livery, something he seems to be against, if they aren't likely to change the whole car to suit a future sponsor? With Mclaren being a road car company now, why not take the Ferrari approach, pick your brand colour and have your sponsors fall in line with it.

Personally, I wasn't fussed about having the car look like a Marlboro tribute act, because I think essentially offering free advertising to a cigarette firm is a bit of a crap thing to do! So far that reason I don't like this one.

I honestly think the sidepods need something on them...preferably in either the chrome or rocket red colour....all that black just looks too drab....
Favourite driver: Lando Norris
Favourite team: McLaren

Turned down the chance to meet Vettel at Silverstone in 2007. He was a test driver at the time and I didn't think it was worth queuing!! 🤦🏻‍♂️

This is standard - you don't change the colours until the cheque clears, unless for convincing a prospect in the privacy of the factory. There have been a couple of people who didn't maintain that discipline and regretted it bitterly when the cheques started bouncing.

But they did change the livery, it is not the same as last year

Sure, but not to anyone's particular branding.

Looks a lot like West branding to me...

I think that's the problem, all Winter they've hinted at one classic livery returning, then went with another. Last year nobody was annoyed when they unveiled the silver car, or when they added the black for the races, indeed people quite liked it. Had they spent the Winter hinting at a return of this colour scheme, it probably would have been welcomed more warmly.

But yeah, the issue for your point is that this colour scheme is very definitely related to a sponsor and a previous Mclaren livery, it is not a blank slate, or a colouscheme unique to Mclaren (sure, I could accept black / chrome and rocket red as being 'Mclaren colours' but in the layout they are in, it's very definitely a throwback to the West livery.).

That was a pretty awesome test livery, but if the Twitter poll is any indication it'll be red and white for sure.

I think the Twitter poll was nonsense really, given that they are suggesting options that Ron pretty explicitly ruled out; changing livery for purely aesthetic reasons.

Secondly, the Twitter account has spent the last couple months hinting at red / white and orange liveries, so it probably doesn't mean much!

Some people really need to understand that Twitter-communication isn't always official or correct information. A social media team need to create awareness and attention around their product. That's all there is to it. Thinking Dennis would change a livery just to please a -minor- part of the Mclaren fanbase is quite funny. He's one of the most serious businessmen in all of the teams.

If Mclaren snatches a big sponsor, the colors will change in function of the sponsorship in combination with Honda. If they don't find one, I'm pretty sure the livery will be fundamentally the same as this one.

yeah, the twitter vote is a PR stunt to get people to retweet and whatnot. It means nothing.

I'm really disappointed they don't test in traditional McLaren Orange. When McLaren lost the Marlboro sponsorship they made a pointed effort to develop a "McLaren Look", where the team sold space to sponsors and those sponsors fitted into McLaren's image. It came as part of the iconic West McLaren look. They made a big fuss in 97' about changing their branding model to a McLaren centric idea, where sponsors join McLaren for the association with brand McLaren (much like Ferrari do). I don't think its really worked but to some extent they pushed all their post 1996 sponsors through this system, even Vodafone. They tested in Orange then switched to the McLaren look; Silver, black and rocket red! This current look is exactly that! Just a bit tiresome. It's not quite working. I'd much rather see the testing orange!
