Red Bull RB11 Renault

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Front Suspension layout is quite different, narrower sidepods, earlier coke bottle, exhaust outlets merged and raised, probably to make the diffuser more effective.

Front suspension layout was changed to optimize airflow.

Many people are remarking that RedBull has changed many of their aerodynamic design philosophy's for this year as a result of needing to go radical compared to previous years because of Mercedes performance last year. This may be true but personally I don't really believe so.

Peter Prodromou was the head of aerodynamics at RB before. This means that while Adrian Newey was head honcho for the car, PP head of aerodynamics. Simply put, many of the previous years cars aerodynamic qualities would have come from PP. This season Dan Fallows has taken over PP's job. As a result, he will then bring his own aerodynamic ideas to the team that maybe he was overruled on before.

You change head aerodynamicist, you are simply going to change how the car will look, simple as that.

I don't see anybody stating this. I think general consens is, that RB11 is a classic RBR evolution car. In terms of aero and packaging the evolution seems quite big considering the visible changes we can see until now.

Me neither. It just looks like a somewhat better implementation of the same basic concept as last year.
That said I don't see dramatic improvements and compared to Merc and now also McLaren I would say in packaging they are rather inferior.
In the Videos from the Jerez test its driveability didn't look super impressive, maybe that was due to high fuel load but still it seemed to change frequently and suddenly from underteering to oversteering and vice versa.
Together with the still somewhat sketchy Impression of Renault's improvements over the winter I doubt they will dramatically catch up to Merc, barring a miracle.
Could it be that the loss of Peter Prodromou did hurt more than initially thought?

Improvements are massive - if it's true and the ICE still has same cooling requirements than last year. Maybe you should look at some of the pics in this thread and compare to the ones from last year.

On the other hand, Mercedes packaging is quite the same than last year. Probably because they focused on reliability more than anything else.

McLaren seems to have a RB10 B-spec this year in terms of aero. But one man does not make up a whole team and the Honda engine still has a long way to go in 2015.

A bit pointy (little driver mistake at the beginning of the clip where he lost the back) and some oversteer in the wet. Sadly he didn't provide a slowmo of the last few seconds with the medium tyre on.

We will only see if those 'massive' improvements will be enough.
And it also remains to been seen if Merc has already reveiled their final spec car re their 'quite the same packaging car'.
I agree none of the contenders may have but some of MGP's parts, e.g. front wing, has been seen as an intermediate step only.

Let us wait and see for the Barca 2 test, then we will know.
