Here's a couple of videos of Mclaren and Mercedes talking about painting their cars
and and some of the work that goes into designing the liveries back in 2013 and 2011

The newest way to paint the car that involves no spraying
It's paint in film form on a substrate

With the information in the video, and knowing from personal experiences with how businesses work and utilize capital, I do not believe the delay in the livery was anything more than a delay due to AzkoNobel (through Sikkens) developing the coatings, techniques, and colors to meet whatever the new livery choice is. Honda will be the primary branding on the car unless an eleventh hour deal is done with someone else.

A few ideas that I used to shape my opinion.

1) Mclaren invested heavily in the "coating" not the paint that they used on the chrome cars - they will want to continue to payback this investment
2) They invested captial and technology in the "Infrared Arch" curing system. Allowing them an 80% reduction in carbon footprint for the paint shop. They will not reverse this environmental impact.
3) The weight savings from such a coating technique is too hard to turn away from.

I cannot guess the color scheme / Livery choice, but it will be a Sikkens based chrome-like application and treatment.

It wouldn't surprise me to see a white-chrome and rocket red chrome livery. It would also not surprise me for them to go with a darker chrome and orange chrome like some of the beautiful livery concepts on this page.

Who say's we cannot have it all? (orange, red, chrome, black etc) *Rubs hands like Dr. Frankenstein "It's alive!" as per Waikeus post:

or the conservative version Manoah posted on page 34:

Though based on the middle part of Alonso' Helmet and Buttons helmet design...suggest we (F1technical armchair pundits) may see a bright red / orange with white livery at the Melbourne Grand Prix.

That was the vodaphone band on the helmet that left that white space..... Its bewn there for a while. Surprised they don't put something there despite not having a title sponsor.

It must have been a Marlboro thing in the beginning because
every Mclaren driver but Senna has had it on their helmet since 1985 and also,
every Ferrari driver has had on their helmet since 1984, Schumacher had a red band after he changed paint jobs,

Vettel and Raikkonen still have it on their helmets, I assume Marlboro just sells the space to Kaspersky lab
As for Mclaren I assume they are waiting for primary sponsor, it a shame they can't advertise Mclaren road cars in the spot

Its for a sponsor, all the cars have a band across their helmets for a sponsor, its just McLaren has hardly got any right now.

I spent 20+ years working in the paint and coatings industry, (AzkoNobel was one of our raw materials suppliers)
Using an Infrared curing system is nothing new, it's been in use as long as I can remember. as for the big investment in this technology it can be had for a few thousand dollars. They made it sound more impressive on the video then it real is.
I would have be more impressed if the said they were using UV to cure their coatings
I think the fact that AzkoNobel is the paint supplier for Mclaren road cars is their only reason not to switch suppliers for the F1 cars

As for the last video I posted that's the way to go, no spraying, no paint booth, no cure time, no VOC's, other then the material backing and a little waste I would say close to 0 on the carbon foot print, all the sponsors logos already embedded in the sheet so no need to clear coat, very light wait, lighter then spray the coating on, just peel and stick what's not to like

My opinion:

The only way to go is White/Red.. that is what people think of if they think at a McLaren/Honda..
Together with the "yellowish" helmet of Alonso it will bring back memories of the past..
