Mercedes AMG F1 W06

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Same here, looks nice with the horns in my opinion.
But it´s always funny it takes the FIA a full year to realize that something might be illegal.

They seemed to get it together pretty quick in RB case.

Can someone explain to me why it takes 2 tests for the FIA to realize something is illegal that was already there from the launch.

What are these MORONS paid for??? :x

Only when they were being successful. Just like with Mercedes today. It's their amateur attempt at engineering the season's possible outcomes. At least Balestre was obvious in his attempts to change the outcomes...

Why is it the FIA's job to notice these things at a test? The teams are allowed to run illegal parts at tests (they do so all the time, e.g. with pitot tube rakes). They only need to spot these things when it comes to the race.

Thenk god those Camera Mounts will get banned. It was the First Thing that caught my eyes on the Ferrari. Those "horns" are hideous. This will make the W06 even prettier.

I read it a few weeks ago on this or another forum that the regulations subscribe that even in testing you must run a legal car.

Besides the FIA, you have the race stewards, since we're not racing yet, you would expect the FIA to do atleast what they are supposed to do.

I'll be the other way round: much uglier.

Just look at the torro rosso :(

I don't think it took CW 2 tests to deem it illegal.
It took newspapers 2 tests to know it was deemed illegal.
Toro Rosso already had it changed in this test and Merc and Ferrari are to change with the aero upgrade on next BCN test.

As I understood it, they agreed on change it till Melbourne so......

And I think it's not difficult to understand that this grey areas are subject of discussion from teams that have a different understanding of the regulations and that that sometimes take a bit of time to achieve a final agreement on what's possible or not. The fact that CW deems it illegal doesn't mean that teams are not allowed to rebate is point of view and, sometimes, win.

Which regulation is banning this? A few weeks ago I checked, but I didn't came across anything outright forbidding it. Could be a technical direction.

As miguel said, CW's word is not absolute. How many times did the FIA itself stepped over him to get what they want? Teams could appeal to this if they want, however that does seem unlikely given the stakes aren't really high.

The mclaren solution is still legal btw.

Cars only have to comply with crash test rules during testing and free practice. They can try out a lot of variations without worrying if they are legal. Otherwise all that testing equipment would infringe the aero rules.

Also, Force India were running their 2014 car, which technically is illegal for the 2015 season. So anything goes in testing.

FI probably did need to alter the internal crash structure, since the deformation rules of the nosetip have changed.
