Mercedes AMG F1 W06

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

What are these MORONS paid for??? :x
Why is it the FIA's job to notice these things at a test? The teams are allowed to run illegal parts at tests (they do so all the time, e.g. with pitot tube rakes). They only need to spot these things when it comes to the race.
I read it a few weeks ago on this or another forum that the regulations subscribe that even in testing you must run a legal car.
Not true, again, as the sensor rakes demonstrate. The thing you do need to do is make sure you have a homologated chassis.

If they had to do that, then they would have had a new nose. They were running the old nose which under 2015 rules, would have been illegal

Yeah cars only have to comply with crash tests for testing, they can be illegal as they want otherwise. Obviously for the teams though, there really isnt a great deal of benefit running an illegal car (not including older cars however)

The cars have to forfill the crash test criteria at all times, even during testing. Since those criteria have changed for this year, they need to pass a nose for those new crash tests.

What FI probably has done is stuffed the old nose with more material to absorb more energy and to pass the test. It isn't that difficult to do that, although it's not really beneficial for performance either since that adds quite a bit of weight. Hardly an issue however at this point.

I may be wrong but won't that make the car top heavy?

Imagine if this works for Merc, then they could cut their sidepods and be even further ahead, just the thought of it :D

Mercedes ran a couple of radiators above and slightly behind the turbo last year, as did many other teams, so there is nothing really new except how high and close to the inlet they are. These cooling systems are usually for the gearbox oil and ancillaries, perhaps ERS as well.

What kind of upgrades do we think Mercedes would have done to their power unit? And how much of an increase would this implement on BHP, Lap time, Fuel.........
I would have thought they would be going for more reliability due what happened last year and not doing a lot to power due to the advantage they had last year.

The McLaren solution almost looks like they had to little cooling in the side pods and stuck this on to be safe. Their air intake is much thicker then other teams (with Merc who has a very slim one)

I could see, when Honda gets their thermals more and more under control, that the top mounted radiators will disappear or shrink to go behind the turbo like all other teams

I don't think we had an overhead shot of W06, so there you go:

New nose and camera mounts on the w06, like the Ferrari. I thought FIA were stopping this?
