I'm not convinced they're showing everything. Their long runs looked closer than they were in China too, but who knows. Malaysia came as a big surprise.

Ferrari are part of one of the biggest car manufacturing groups in the world, have everything in house on the same site and have stepped up their budget considerably; despite getting off to a poor start with the regulations, there's absolutely every reason they should be able to compete with Mercedes.
