2014 Engines: Do they sound right?

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Having been to Silverstone for the Friday fp1 and 2 sessions in 2014 , I'm 100% sure that the tv sound has been "Ratnerised" , to fall in line with Bernies thoughts on the subject.

In real life they sound fine ... and without the deafening high end its much easier to differentiate all of the other unusual sounds being produced.

I mean...I'm not a sound engineer, but clearly they are doing a waaaay better job. It's awesome. Even the video is somehow
more dynamic and eye-catching than anything F1 could produce these days. They should hire some stuff from US.
Don't get me wrong, I like indycar but the comparison is not fair, the 2.2L is 37.5% more displacement that F1, plus it is not fuel limited and it does not have TERS.

But yes FOM needs to do a better job a getting the sound out better through the broadcast.
They are running separate pipes from the wastegates. And they are twin turbos

They should just crank up the revs, everything at 20krpm sounds amazing even one cylinder!

And 30 000 rpms sounds even better :D

You do realize that mill is a 2-stroke, guess they need to be un-banned for F1..

Yes, but that was not the point...

Yes, the point is:
A, Its about limiting piston speed, not RPM.
B, Its about firing pulses ( number/time) not cylinders, per se.

Sorry, I thought the topic was about engine sound. The video was just a quick example that high revving motor sounds good no matter how many cylinders it has (well 0 would be bad number for obvious reasons..).

I'm not sure what you are refering to with the piston speed limit, so that point I do have missed totally.

Q, What creates the sound?
A, The working cycles/time.

Piston speed is the primary limitation, & F1 sized piston engines cannot be made to run 30,000rpm..

Apparently the Engines could be louder in 2016 already:

But they'll want avoid using the wastegate wherever possible.

Yeah, but the wastegate will be used for maximum power setting.

But I agree, thats only for overtakings etc. So I cant see (or hear), how this would bring much change.

Having attended numerous races over the years, I sincerely hope the engines dont get any louder. The days of wearing ear plugs are hopefully over. I also like being able to hear the tyres and brakes. I would agree the noise of higher revs is fantastic and I hope that we get to hear these engines reving higher.
