and still plan to run the race they would set the grid by the drivers standings as of the last race
1- Lewis Hamilton..........2- Sebastian Vettel
3- Nico Rosberg.............4- Kimi Raikkonen
and so on...

Driver Standings? I guess that's relatively fair. Or a Sunday morning qualifying like has been suggested.

I say run the Qualifying I mean what are the rain tires good for of not to be used to slowly drive back in the garage after you out them on. Why do they even have rain tires if they won't be used..... What I mean is run qualifying early morning even if there is light rain. Lol but have a quali other wize use the driver standings.
Its not as much about rain as it is about lightning and visibility. Its just not a safe environment.

Most reasonable solution would be FP1 results as the starting grid.

FP1 would make sense if it had already been established as the convention - and that would be a good idea so as to encourage teams to run and go as fast as possible in all sessions just in case.

But since it's not the convention - and since no one established this at the time of FP1 - I personally think championship standings makes the most sense.

Sunday qualifying will have to do, today is supposed to be just as bad as yesterday, as the hurricane has almost entirely dissipated, and all that moisture is getting picked up by the front moving across the state towards an anti cyclonic vortex on the Texas east coast.

Anyone know what the weather's like at the track right now ? Will there be too much standing water come FP3 and/or quali ?

edit: Not likely since it's around 6.30 am local time

My guess is that there will be no FP3, just qualifying tomorrow morning then race in the afternoon. As usual when there is no Friday running Mercedes will be miles ahead hence Suzuka and Sochi. Maybe when we finally have Friday running in Mexico we can have an exciting weekend.

I think a sunday quali + race is the only solution now.

Someone may have asked this before, iv`e only glanced at the last few pages

Has this ever happened before, is there any precedent for a situation such as this where it`s been unable to complete qualifying for whatever factor?

With tv times being the way they are i doubt they can be too flexible with the race start time (if at all). Could they potentially make the race shorter and have a single quali session right before the race?

Yes, it happened in Japan a few years ago. Then, the solution was to postpone qualifying until Sunday morning. Hopefully that's an option here, the weather forecasts make it look like a possibility.
