Sure, you need to go slow.
If you go slow, you lose temperature in the tyres, and can't get any grip. There's a point with F1 cars where problems compound so much that they simply can't run any more.
Low grip leads to the driver slowing down, leads to the tyres cooling, leads to the driver slowing, leads to less downforce being generated, leads to the driver slowing, leads to the tyres cooling, leads to ... until suddenly you're doing 30mph to stay on the track, and you're not racing any more.
