Mercedes W07 Speculation Thread

Fans have been banned on the cars since the Brabham fan car haven't they?

Not when in the garage, i think he means as in the leafblowers they use to cool the Cooling and brakes after a race. Which is quit the possibility, but some of those photos look like it is a much much larger intake. Could they be producing that 900 alleged horsepower and have had to increase airflow to the Intercooler fairly dramatically though? I know from my personal experience with Intercooling my turbo cars, that a slightly larger cooler improves overall power dramatically across the powerband.

The airbox looks huge while the sidepod inlets are significantly smaller with a very extreme undercut . I assume the negative CG impact of the higher mounted radiators is outweighed by better diffusor performance. The larger airbox would also be a negative for the rear wing.
The nose is very similar to the W06, very few differences there. I think the front monocoque has been raised.

The sidepods look quite different compared to the W06. Much more undercut and raised higher as f300v10 suggested.

I don't think so. When the car stops in the garage, the teams have a special fan/s they attach to the over head inlet.

Took a stab at trying to enhance the photos that have been posted thus far...

Good effort Bhall.

Regarding previous questions over the validity of the overhead inlet, note that the Ferrari SF16-H also has a larger inlet, though not as significantly sized.

Also looks like significant increase in wheelbase. Nose does appear higher and much wider towards the cockpit.
Almost has a "less refined" Wo6 look.

I think the nose and the airbox aren't what we're actaually going to see during the races.

The airbox does look huge and awkward, Mercedes did experiment with an bigger airbox near the end of 2015 (raced with it in Mexico if memory serves)...

Maybe the "final version" will be more streamlined with ears, and this is just a stand in.

The roll hoop and subsequently the forward portion of the engine airbox inlet, are part of the monocoque which as to be homologated, if I understand it correctly. I don't think teams can alter the monocoque during the season, but perhaps Mercedes have designed a workaround into the W07.

Yeah, maybe a return to this:

I believe the regulations now forbid such an arrangement.

The mandated fin on the engine cover of the W07 is quite noticeably larger than on the SF16-H. I can only surmise from this comparison that the W07 has a smaller engine cover, length wise at least. If Ferrari have moved their intercooler away from the 'V', the airbox in theory could be repositioned/reshaped to shrink the rear portion of the engine cover, however this doesn't appear to have happened (smaller engine cover).
