Red Bull RB12 TAG-Heuer

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Maybe the haven't fixed the pipes as securely under the body work so they haven't actually added weight, they just chose to fix the pipes in a different place.

Having said that I just spotted the SFI does actually have a strap round them, so not that novel. Carry on :)

Looks like titanium, so I guess it's probably only 12g...
Looks like a single CNC machined peice that is welded to the tubes from the inner surfaces.

It actually looks like the three pipes share a small amount of thickness - instead of the smaller pipes butting against the larger pipe, the walls actually flow into each other. This would likely make up for the weight added with those straps.

Good catch and one of those neat details. This endpiece will ceteris paribus increase the stiffness of the exhaust assembly. I guess that there is some weight shaving at least for the two small waste pipes when it comes to wall dimensions or upflow attachment. The thermal stress of the waste pipes shouldn't be that great so with this specific stiffening endpiece they might be able to lighten the pipes themselves more then other teams and undue aero drawbacks.

Ferrari bundels the three pipes a good deal more upflow with a completely different design logic. Obviously not a big deal, but such solutions are one of the reasons I like F1 and this forum.

Sorry if this has already been discussed but isn't a matt finish/low surface finish 'more aerodynamic' than a glossy high surface finish?

Red Bull has confirmed that the paint has no measurable aero effect.

It depends. I know if this were a golf ball the air 'adheres' to the boundary layer a lot further along the ball than it would to a smooth one; creating less drag in the separated region. However the smaller the frontal surface area becomes in relation to the surface parallel to the airflow the greater the role the parallel surface plays in creating drag. So the answer is I don't know :D
