McLaren MP4-31 Honda

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Yesterday there was a sensor attached to the exhaust. From another angle:

This sound reminds me of RB7's blown diffusor type of noise, once they come out of throttle. Sounds very good, however it brings me to think whether they've found similar application like the EBD and what is the reason behind that idle throttle sound?

I'd say they probably still use off-throttle blowing, but for a different reason: to cool the engine by passing cold air through it.

My guess is that Honda's software has not yet been engineered to properly integrate with all its new hardware. I believe this was the case last year (and in 2014 for other teams I suppose) as the exhaust noises gradually cleaned up as they introduced new/revised code.

I would be expect that Honda could arrive this year without such software issues, but then again, last year they showed up at the first test not having even a basic code written to leave the garage without requiring a full race-start launch!

Finishing races is important, but racing is more important.

Well, that's a very big 'water pressure data anomaly'

Why Mclaren didn't bring two cars? They don't have time to loose. Or it is only 1 car possible by the rules?

There's only so many ways one can have a coolant leak, most of those ways in the context of an F1 engine mean the fault is terminal. It's probably easier to just put in a new engine than try to mend it.

Anything new spotted on the Mclaren or are they still running aero work? The car looks fairly well developed out of the box.

They have the monkey seat on so maybe they are trying to blow it off throttle. Or does the engine sound like that all the time?

Finally, everyone knows that Red Bull is a joke and Max Verstappen is overrated.
