People aren't talking about light plastic, they are talking about fighter jet style cockpits that are lined with det cord to blow them.

The entire point of having something like this is to protect the driver, so it will have to be extremely strong, and thus will take a good deal of force to shatter. The f-16 & f-22 for example have such strong bubbles that they blow it off as one piece, instead of trying to shatter it, because the amount of explosive needed isn't safe for the pilot.

nice photo, I don't think we could have a more perfect example of why people who suggest a fighter jet style system have no idea what they are talking about.

Just to clarify, there has been investigations into equipping the F-16 canopy with a shatter extraction system for the pilot but the F-16 and F-22 canopys are designed for maximum all round visibility - something our F1 canopy will not be designed for (forwards and sideways primarily) - so the cords running over the pilot hinder that design and are thus not used. The other reason is that their canopies are so big (to provide the all round visibility ) that they have to be very strong to stand up to the safety and structure requirements which does make them too strong for the seat to punch through. That is why they elected to blow the entire canopy away.

The explosives that are meant to shatter the canopy are controlled and directed for a accurate break in the canopy, not randomly set off to break the canopy. Thus most of the explosive force is directed away from the pilot which would not make it unsafe for him to be inside the cockpit if it goes off - providing he wears his usual flight kit.

kind regards

I considered going into detail about that, but i thought the topic of shaped charges, might be a little much for your average forum member.

The ex aerospace engineer i talked with about this a few weeks ago said the thing that is/was potentially detrimental to the pilot, was the pressure build up in the cockpit before the actual break.

Now there are 2 Pillars just in the Way of the Drivers sight then they are going through a Corner. From a visibility standpoint i don't think that is an improvement. Aesthetics don't really look that different. You still have a Halo and now even 2 Pylons.

Still not pleased. Go full Canopy or go home i say.
DTM cars are probably much worse though!

Note also: the F-16 does have a one-piece front windscreen-canopy, reverse to most fighter bubble-types..

Yet, has anyone able to produce evidential data demonstrating 'lexan' type polycarbonate plastic to "shard"?

Certainly AFAIK, the stuff used in helmet visors is too 'plastic' to form a potential dagger-like "shard" as such..

& if used in a sufficient thickness to enable a strong wraparound clear-view windscreen, without a total bubble top..

They can make a beer glass that shatters into blunt pieces rather than shards...I'm sure they could do the same to a screen for an F1 car...

Turned down the chance to meet Vettel at Silverstone in 2007. He was a test driver at the time and I didn't think it was worth queuing!! 🤦🏻‍♂️

Why should the canopy shred to razors?

Canopy is meant to be in one piece after an impact

Agreed, so much better than that monster creation we saw during testing

That looks really good, doesn't look like a retrograde bolt on like that stupid do nothing halo device!

The general shape looks ok, but it should be all transparent, the needlessly heavy pillars - block the view..

Yes far better then the halo that Ferrari used
Looks very similar to the one andrewf1 did (minus the extra supports)
I asked him for a photo without the protection over the drivers head

Hopefully andrewf1 can make some adjustments to this one
and we can get an idea of what the Mercedes would look like with the red bull concept
