McLaren MP4-31 Honda

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

You're absolutely right. It was wrong for me to deprive people of an opportunity to pat themselves on the back.

Last year the rules weren't going to change so chances of seeing this kind of changes were close to none. I'm not in favour of more testing is better. Suppose the results from last week were not satisfying, no good correlation and they need to retest? We can't know for sure. Maybe as you say, extra data gathering. Also, last week it was Fernando's car, this time, Jenson. Maybe checking different opionions/conditions/... Again, don't know what to think of it.

Just to confirm: Are they using that wing this year or is it just testing for next season?

Just testing, 2017 concept.

Are they? I'd doubt they'd risk showing their hand, when they were so tight lipped they wouldn't even show Jensen the 2017 car until his contract was air tight. I'd consider this a "baseline" wing concept, they want to see how a more simplified wing functions, this is part bluff part validations exercise.

They are not the only one to test a similar wing ready for 2017....

Who else? I've looked at all the other cars, they all have the outwash tunnel. Was it a 2017 mule?

Seems you're right. Their version still had an outwash tunnel, but you're right. In any case, I don't see how it invalidates my previous statement.

Where I said: "I'd consider this a "baseline" wing concept, they want to see how a more simplified wing functions, this is part bluff part validations exercise."

Especially when you consider this quote from Williams:
"Here and in Mexico we are running with an experimental front wing, but it's experimental rather than development, it's a bit of a correlation exercise," said Symonds

The front wing design isn't new though, it's a sort of 2013-2016 hybrid.

Ferrari ran a very similar leading edge on their 2013 car;
