Red Bull RB13 TAG Heuer

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

No they aren't. Look at Mercedes as an extreme example. So different. They have a good engine, just put as much wings and stuff above the car, brute downforce which is more reliable rather than chasing complex ground effect difusor tricks. Mercedes don't rely too much on the Diffusor perofromance. To some extent I see Ferrari doing something similar to Mercedes, although not as much.
The largest producer of downforce on a Formula 1 car is the diffuser. For ALL cars.

Because the rake change and rear wing have nothing to do with each other :-)

DRS doesn't stop the floor and diffuser working. Still impressive though.

I suppose if you can do that with the car, plastering aero doodads all over becomes a somewhat pointless exercise. Maybe they transferred all their aero staff over to suspension.

I totally agree with you, and if you have seen the pre season interview with the engineer team, it was already clear that we would not see "the" big aero loophole feature, but a simplistic and super efficient car that pushes 2017 regulations to the limit. The non existing fancy bodywork (absolutely contrary to Mercedes) simply screams "low drag" all over the place.

Could only be loaded vs unloaded suspension. Both shots should be taken at the same point on the track, otherwise not very relevant.

Loaded in what sense? When accelerating the rear suspension doesn't compress that much. Plus the DRS is open, so would we be seeing peak acceleration/weight shifting in that moment anyway?
