Mercedes AMG F1 W08 EQ Power +

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

It fascinates me how something that, to my n00by eyes, looks extremely draggy with all the elements is just ... right. Always interesting when you come across things that are just out of your league :)

Man, that is just ludicrous..
Education is that which allows a nation free, independent, reputable life, and function as a high society; or it condemns it to captivity and poverty.

because it's draggy
but it is right if the balance asks more downforce than more efficiency
it s always a compromise that depends by the track u know, and well also by the advantage that you have in term of enginehorsepower and energy recovery

f1 cars are very draggy

Really now? I have no idea what Scarbs is trying to say there. Hard to see how 0.5mm slit on top of the car has anything to do with the floor... Waiting for that explanation!

They seem typical flexible devices... the wing can flex down under conditions studied with Cfd directing better the flow towards the radiator
the lateral sidepod deviator can open a bit from the sidepod

With all these intricate aero pieces, have Mercedes been too smart for their own good and made a car that is so hard to set up perfectly that they end up going down wrong avenues on one or both cars??
Favourite driver: Lando Norris
Favourite team: McLaren

Turned down the chance to meet Vettel at Silverstone in 2007. He was a test driver at the time and I didn't think it was worth queuing!! πŸ€¦πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ

When viewed from below, any visible bodywork must lie on the reference plane. The bargeboards have slots in them on the reference plane so the tuna fin wings have slots cut in them above these slots. The extended floor at the corner of the sidepod has a slot in it so the curved top vane over the side pod shoulder has a slot cut in it too. Hence them being called legality slots.
If you are more fortunate than others, build a larger table not a taller fence.

Their setup issues do not seem to be aero related. I believe it's more traction and driveability related stuff like differential settings and tyre pressures and maybe geometry that affect how the car warms the tyres.
Lewis' car in particular has exhibited strange behavior, i can't even say it looks aero related. The car just looks undriveable because of having unbalanced levels of grip between the front and rear axle.
For Sure!!

@ justafan Ok thanks for that complete explanation.

I really wonder if F1A would penalize for that though. I mean, unless Charlie or a rival team has the full on CAD files... But it is great to know these engineers have integrity but I miss the days when good ole' fashionee cheating was a respected art form.

I think with the new snowplow front wing design Mercedes found extra points of front downforce but couldn't equal it with rear downforce and that's why hamilton's rear end snapped out several times.

The setup issue and the massive balance problem that's not responding to changes is usually a sign of a cracked chassis - but I can't think of any incident that would have done it.
