The guy that got me into F1 was talking about them, but I have no idea what he meant. He said that they were banned, but didnt know when.
Anyone have any pics/info?
Chris
I hate the subjective banning of radical technological advances, especially on the grounds of unproven safety risk.bar555 wrote:They were banned after San Marino GP in 1998 , because FIA decided that they were dangerous and blocked drivers side vision .
They were first introduced by Tyrrell in 1997 =D> and many other teams copied them , such as Prost , Sauber , Jordan even Ferrari .
Their role was to add downforce
That would be something to behold. X-wings mounted on the viking horns...ESPImperium wrote:From a pure aesthetic point of view, they made the cars horible looking.
On a side note, could the wing bit of them be added to say the straight bit of the viking horns behing the drivers head like on the current Honda RA108, BMW Sauber F1.08, and the McLaren MP4-22 and MP4-21???
Would thay disrupt the flow of air towards the rear wing???
Their were banned because it was unsafe at pitstops because it was in the way of the fuel hose.bar555 wrote:They were banned after San Marino GP in 1998 , because FIA decided that they were dangerous and blocked drivers side vision .

A bit lame... I couldn't find a clear pic of T-wing's front view so I used the back view of T-wings to attach them to the horns.Conceptual wrote:That would be something to behold. X-wings mounted on the viking horns...
I'd REALLY like to see that!
No bodywork allowed in that area. BMW's horns are about as wide as allowed at that height.Conceptual wrote:Is there a specific rule that prevents these from being used today, with a different mounting solution?
We want F1 cars, not science fiction wheeled spaceships! They are horrible, They ARE dangerous because of vision reduction and beyond all that I think they add too much drag in middle and low downforce tracks.Conceptual wrote: ...
And why dont they bring those back? From what I read, they were used to maintain downforce when following another car. Isnt that what everyone is looking for at the moment?

Ive just thought about maybes inverting them, putting them on the side closest to the air box.modbaraban wrote:A bit lame... There are more elegant ways to maintain downforce when following another car, like using a bigger diffuser or changing the pressure center position of the cars.
I remember TV comentator called that "ashtrays"
I saw that Tyrrell running in a GP back in 1997 and thought it was one of the ugliest F1 cars ever.
