I think he's missed the point that McLaren have been working for most of this year on the 2018 car and will be until Dec 31st(2017 Financial Year). Honda have already paid for the 2017 Financial year, hence, partialy funding the McLaren 2018 year Contender.

Interesting to speculate how much McLaren Chassis Data will translate from Honda to STR in 2019... I doubt 2018 would have any impact unless they already have very similar philosophies.

Work on the 2018 car is started and funded in 2017 and Honda's deal ends at the end of this year so yes you could say they've paid for next years car as their money was in the budget.

The bosses at McLaren have agreed as a one year only deal to pay 2018's costs at the same rate as Honda so there will be no shortfall for the 2019 car either.

The effects of the whole in the budget Honda's departure will bring will not be felt on-track until the 2020 car if Zak can't find a sponsor or sponsors to fill in Honda's share 2019.
nice rumour, if that makes u happy.
What part do you think is a rumour?
The part where you can’t can’t provide any quotes, links, proof or evidence for probably

I just thought it was common knowledge about both tbh.

Here's an example of how car development is funded, its no different for any team..

The bulk of development work on F1 cars is done in the year before they are launched so Mercedes’ performance last year was fuelled by its 2011 spending.

Here's the AMuS story about the McLaren bosses footing the bill for 1 year only while Zak finds sponsors...

It will be expensive for that. McLaren has to pay Renault the engines, the salary of the driver now carry themselves, and there is no development subsidy from Japan anymore. Since the despair must have been very large. Shareholders Mansour Ojjeh and Bahrain Mumtalakat will pay the additional costs for one year. So much time has Zak Brown and Eric Boullier, with good results on the racetrack again attract sponsors.

So yeah 1 fact and 1 rumour I suppose but Zak spoke about the shareholders here and AMuS had everything else spot on so..

"We can't afford not to be on the podium," Brown said.

"It's a big decision that has lots of elements to it, and economics are one.

"Fortunately we have extremely committed shareholders that we can make a sporting decision and deal with the economics.

"We're not financially challenged. We can navigate any financial situation."

So we have..

2017-Honda/McLaren fund MCL 33
2018-Ojjeh/Mumtalakat/McLaren fund MCL 34
2019-???/McLaren fund MCL 35

MCL 35 is the 2020 race car. Obviously in season development comes out the same budget so if there is still a hole in 2019 the MCL 34 will suffer late in the season so any hole in the budget will not be felt on track until the second half of 2019 at the earliest if Zak can't find sponsors in 2018 and the Bahraini's refuse to keep bailing them out for 2019.

Well you’ve got me sold 😂, not that I’ve ever been concerned about McLarens finances, McLarens owners have very deep pockets, their long game is to be the most successful super car manufacturer and the racing team is a pivotal part to that plan, there’s no way they let it go down the tube to save a few hundred million

The part that’s open to speculation is just how much Money, if any Honda were paying McLaren. We know Honda spent a vast amount on the engine design, manufacture & running costs but I’ve never seen a credible article or interview when anyone from McLaren or Honda have talked about paying money to McLaren or paying their drivers salaries, lots of speculation but no fact

Yeah agree, I've seen lots of rumors putting the figure at everything from "effectively 75m when you consider the engine cost saving" which would suggest a pretty limited cash injection to the actual budget, to everything up to and including 300m!.

Massive differences so who knows really and even on the Alonso salary contribution as you say was never confirmed.

Hah. I bet Mansour Ojjeh is just as culpable for the extremely high sponsorship prices at McLaren. I'm keeping a keen eye out to see if the exorbitant asoing prices will ever fall.
