Mercedes Power Unit Hardware & Software

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

AMuS:
Cars with Mercedes engines are not as fast on the straights as they should be. It's supposed to have something to do with the oil specification. We hear that Petronas has dug up a type of oil from 2016 in order to be on the safe side with oil consumption. Until the start of the season, the oil consumption of Mercedes and Ferrari was only 0.01 litres below the permitted limit of 0.6 litres per 100 kilometres.

After the oil correction Mercedes should be on the safe side in oil consumption. But that also costs power. Ferrari apparently continues full risk just below the pain threshold.

Something that still bothers me, is how it was possible that after McLaren’s 2014 year with Mercedes, they were not able to give Honda a proper target of how efficient the ERS should be. Even without access to the powerunit and settings, the must see in the telemetry exactly how much mgu-k time was available.

Would Mercedes had been so bad to limit ERS on the McLaren car, so that they never would find out how efficient the powerunit was and could not relay accurate information about the Mercedes potential?

The 2016 Honda power unit was already as powerful as the 2014 Mercedes PU so as the saying goes things do move quickly in F1.

Maybe that's why it's all hands on deck in the engine department at Mercedes. They've been caught.

A sceptic would say Mercedes are down on power because of the “oil burn” restrictions.
Or if you never believed the oil burn was contributing as much as most here suggested you would say Ferrari caught up.

They've run this restriction a long time though. Half of last year at least? Why would they be more affected by that now?

This year oil restriction is 0.6l/100km. Renault engine burns almost no oil, Ferrari and Mercedes were 0.1l down on restriction. Mercedes went safe and further limited oil consumption while Ferrari are still on aggresive side and on limit.

Not really, it was the complete opposite actually. They brought a new engine to Spa to still be able to burn 1.2 litres. From Monza on every new engine was restricted to 0.9 litres of oil usage.

Yes, that's what AMuS wrote. I wonder where they got this information from? :) Is it as reliable as their news during testing on Ferrari being third in pecking order? :D

Would it not be a good indication if
A, oilburn is costing them power, times would be worse
B, Ferrari has more power, their times would be better.

There will of course be improvements due to other 'tweaks'

Well last season I kept saying that the whole oil burn thing was overrated.
And that you would be able to tell this year when the cars didn’t get slower.

Well, guess what AMuS just reported?

They claim that Ferrari was more or less even, to just ahead of Mercedes at Australia.

It also says that from Bahrain, Mercedes decided to switch to a new (or rather old, from 2016, if I read correctly) oil, and to cut down on oil use from 0.58l/100km to the 0.1-0.2 levels that Honda and Renault use.

Apparently that reduction is to be sure they weren't under some circumstances 'accidentally' above the 0.6l/100km limit that the FIA now rigorously checks, and thus (caught at being?) illegal. Ferrari still uses up to 0.6l/100km, and thus have more power now (but possible also more risk).
