VER and RIC will need to be in full attack mode the first few laps, including risks because of their tire choice...
Well, they are the 2 perfect drivers ready to attack and take risks.
VES could take BOT straight away, but VET won't just hand it to him.
RIC should be able to take RAI and HAM, but BOT will be difficult.
There's lap 1 up until the safety car.

Hamilton has had one of his trademark off days, which I predict will prove costly with Max alongside him.

Starting on compromised tyres isn't going to help either...

Just curious: How big should have been the gap between Ferrari with the updated engine (gain of just about 10 hp) and Mercedes for you not to talk like you do right now? Vettel told that he in fact had a mistake in his last run which cost him time. He told he should have been faster.
Let's say 2 tenths difference. Would this have been enough in your opinion to not tell that Ferrari was down on power?
New engine should be at least 1/10th faster than the Australia performance of the initial version (which even in Baku could outdrag a Mercedes getting an extra tow). The Mercedes engine has 6 races under its belt, including those where it was turned up several times to clear traffic and chase leaders so... end of life engine vs cutting edge iteration of a better engine? Half a second?

You'd hope it'd be that much, given all the money spent on PU development and the amount of complaints about this being an engine formula of the past few years.
Half a second? I'm not an expert, but I doubt an engine loses about 30 hp over the course of 6 races? Mercedes had to fight in a few races, but put it in cruise control in at least two races.

It was told that Ferrari's suspected ERS trick would give them 20 hp which would be equal to 0.3 seconds (in Baku). Let's say they don't have this gain anymore and considering their engine update was worth 10 hp shouldn't they still have been behind Mercedes on a power sensitive track?
In his second run in Q3 Vettel was 1 tenth faster than in his first run after S1 and S2, but made a mistake in S3 and therefore almost didn't improve. If it was not for the mistake, he should have been faster than Bottas by 2 tenths.

Maybe Hamilton has his car setup for the extra weight he will be carrying in the race, and that was why he constantly locked his left front wheel in the heavy braking. But I think he was just having one of his off days/weekends and will have to bounce back at the next race. What is the pitstop time here? Is the undercut a possibilty?

He'll have to bounce back tomorrow.

I'd also be careful arguing that 'really, Ferrari should've been even faster because Vettel said so'. What's the time difference between Bottas and Hamilton usually? If Hamilton had been 'on it' today, what would Merc's maximum pace have been? Faster than Bottas? How much by? A tenth? Two? Makes him faster than Ferrari...with an exhausted engine.
In one of my previous posts I mentioned that it's not right to argue that Hamilton automatically would have been faster just because he normally is. It could have very well been that Bottas unleashed the whole potential of the car.

I think some people are blowing the 'old engine' deficit out of proportions. It is an Engine built my Mercedes, not a Tyre made by Pirelli that will just fall off the cliff after certain amount of usage. Yes, the old engine is slower, but not as much as some are suggesting here. Also, with everyone praising the power of Merc engine, why is no body considering their reliability? Maybe the have got the reliability so high that they can do 7 races or maybe 8 races with normal power and this extra race is not hurting them at all?

Let's break this down.
- Ferrari have been consistently faster in qualifying.
- Ferrari PU has outperformed Mercedes PU (as recently as Baku, Hamilton with a double-tow didn't even close on Vettel with only a single tow, let alone pull along side and that's a LONG straight).
- New Ferrari PU.
- Mercedes PU with 7-8,000km on it (including a minimum of 18 laps at maximum performance).
- Canada is a power sensitive circuit which should play into the strengths Ferrari have shown this season and, especially, having not only having a fresh PU but one that is a generation further advanced than the Mercedes.

Actual performance? Less than 1/10th faster than the slowest Mercedes driver.

I also see that in an article attributed to Mercedes from 2017, they view HP impact as "At Montreal and Baku - the most power sensitive tracks in F1 - power is worth 0.25s for each additional 10 HP."
https://www.pitpass.com/59980/Power-Sensitivity

Yeah, toally nothing to see here.

On a different note. Sure, Vettel said he should be a tenth faster (effectively insignificant to the conversation as shown above). How do you know he is right? How much faster should Bottas have been? Hamilton?

At least Hamilton was humble. I didn't expect him to take any blame openly, but he didn't put the blame elsewhere.

Personally i think Hamiltons performance was down to the HS not being in the ideal range. In Q2 he was the man to beat on the Ultras, purple everywhere up until the huge lockup that ruined the lap.

On the HS, in Q1, he was behind Bottas up until around the 3rd attempt on the same tire. Seemed to me that Bottas just got more out of the HS quicker vs Hamilton who needed a bit more to get them working properly. Obviously, in Q3 there’s no time for that, one outlap and then the lap. Also consider that up until Q1, the Mercedes had only used a single set of HS during the practice sessions.

It is what it is and congrats to Bottas for delivering it when it counted. I still think though Hamilton will be the man to beat tomorrow and i wonder how Mercedes will play along. Will they order Valtteri to make room if Hamilton is behind and quicker? Will they let them fight it out? It will depend a lot on how things pan out tomorrow.

I am also a bit nervous about Max in 3rd, especially on HS tires. He will be on the clean side and on stickier tires, so i could well imagine a good launch of the line, maybe even a crash into T1 with Vettel and Bottas. Maybe it is good that Max is starting ahead of Hamilton...
Not for nothing, Rosberg's Championship is the only thing that lends credibility to Hamilton's recent success. Otherwise, he'd just be the guy who's had the best car. — bhall II

Wow, I was impressed by Bottas’ lap and then Vettel up and went even quicker!

They go quicker than the V10’s of yore and do it at roughly half the fuel consumption. Insane engineering feat.

We see the Sky Sports broadcast in Canada, and I guess, in Q2 there was a lap from Kimi which was engine noise-only and zero commentary (they even showed "Audio Up" in the screen)... frankly, the engine sound with the Turbo woosh was really satisfactory - I think it is just the case of not having the mic in the right place for normal broadcast.
