Don't know. It was reported that Ferrari had higher degradation in their FP2 long runs than Merc but who knows how they might changed the set up over night. They can definitely put a lot of pressure on Hamiltion given that he has two Ferraris behind him.

Don't know. It was reported that Ferrari had higher degradation in their FP2 long runs than Merc but who knows how they might changed the set up over night. They can definitely put a lot of pressure on Hamiltion given that he has two Ferraris behind him.
You can count Kimi to be attacked and over taken by Bottas and behind him, is Verstappen!

I can only imagine the trouble with overheating Mercedes would have been in if Pirelli didn't bring special tyres here.

One can argue neck issue and subsequent missing track time cost Vettel pole today. Oh well, win some, lose some. Hoping for a great start tommorow.

On another note, speed trough all the major corner was trully epic and insane today.

There is not a coincidence that here 6 cars from top 10 are with a Ferrari PU (not the engine ... I`ll explain that later):

And here are 5 arguments why Ferrari PU now is more powerful than the Merc one:
1. Cr.Horner`s statement;
2. Niky Lauda said on Sky that Ferrari are faster both on the straights and in the corners;
3. Nico Rosberg said on RTL that after 5 years Ferrari PU is ahead due to they have found something at the ERS side;
4. Lewis said that in Q3 Ferrari pulled out something extra out of the bag;
5. Between Q2 and Q3, Kimi raised his top speed from 323 to 325km/h and Vettel from 321 to 324km/h

Merc team did the same top speeds in all qualy sessions so it seems to me that they are in those 2-3 races when they`ll run in conservative PU modes until they are satisfied by the reliability ...

The problem with the normal (older) specification is that, on newly asphalted surfaces, the tyres get heated too fast on outer layer and by the time the inner heats, the outer layer is gone. Hence these new specification tyres. It's not just Mercedes, every team would have struggled with older specification on this track. Remember Ferrari and Vettel's comments after Barcelona test, post the race which shut down this whole special tyre made for Mercedes thingy?

More tread, more heat/energy in the tyres would be my guess. But no matter what my guess about the reason would be, you know that Pirelli brought the special tyres to prevent blistering, right?

It' the lateral movement in the rubber causes a good proportion of heat in tyres. If there's less rubber then there's less lateral movement.

I'm referring to slicks in this case.
Always find the gap then use it.

I'm surprised why most are surprised about Ferrari's race. It was well-established over the past races that Ferrari has a more powerful PU and arguably better aero, or, rather a more optimised aero for their philosophy whereas Merc still hasn't matched it all out. If anything, this is Ferrari's race to lose.

There's not enough data to 100% support this, mainly because BEST SPDH only shows us top speeds, which are aero dependant.

Q3 data below:

S2 and S3 speed traps are traction and corner exit dependant and so can not be taken at face value, while S1 and SPDH are already into the drag limited teritory.

Maybe ferrari really is tiny bit ahead, but more data is needed.

Horner stated that the data they had showed Ferrari's PU was the more powerful one.
If you are more fortunate than others, build a larger table not a taller fence.
