The way I understood it, they will run an old Spec 2 engine anyway, so getting a new Spec 3 one in the pool should make no difference for the chance of finishing this race.

So to me it more looks like expectations this weekend are not particularly high.

pretty weird... why they change the engine during FP1, not before or after !?

I hope all this is only for testing purposes. New components, etc...

But.. I've a strange feeling about that and reliability issues. Maybe only because so many times it were issues with new PU evolutions #-o

no but it makes a higher chance in the other races at not much cost in this race

Their point with new spec 2 engine is to recalibrate engine for high altitudes. They have more knowledge with spec 2 than spec 3. That's the reason why they are using spec2 and in Fp1 already

do they get a new Spec 2 though? I think they started FP1 with a new Spec 3 engine (to get it into the pool, for the next race), and then changed back to an old Spec 2 one for the remainder of the weekend.

Upgrades on car must be working well, seeing Hartley so high up is a miracle. Kudos to him though for delivering. Expecting it to be tight though depending on the weather. Kinda feel Honda has bit more to extract than Renault engine. Wet quali might be even more interesting. Top 3 quali?

Indeed. Pre race press conference said Hartley gets the upgraded package this race. So far it seems to be working. They've had another week to prepare engine maps for his engine too.

Hoping for a good qualification

Not that issues found in the PU after Austin GP,but the PU which produced at the same time with galsy's PU had some issues on dyno test.Anyway,Honda think galsy’s PU may have same issues and cannot be uesd again.Those PUs was assembled in a different way(compared to others,like the PU in hartley's car),so don't know if its related.Anyway,the PU will be send to HRD Sakura for a further investigation.
Both car will run Spec 2 this weekend,its the original plan.

Engine is not designed for 1 race that has low air pressure.

As per different articles by Honda Gasly Spec 3b had different assembly compared to Hartley. Whilst Hartley is fine, Gasly version not so fine and sent back to Sakura.

A new spec 3b similar to Hartley assembly was installed to be added to pool and an installation lap was done and then changed for next race. Now Gasly on old Spec2.

Due to low air pressure chances spec 3b will not be able to produce enough torque as no adequate engine mapping will be there. If new spec 3b gets damaged they cannot differentiate if its a design issue or complication due to low air pressure.

Spec 2 is a known entity and they are able to tune it with more confidence which they have done well eith Hartley. Also note the aero upgrades Hartley has will be easier to compare with spec 2 rather than complication with spec 3 engine.

So did they tried two different (at least on the installation side) engine? And one of two idea were failed for now. Can we understand it like this?

no, it did not fail. Gasly got a new engine so that he can use it in Brazil, without a penalty. It has nothing to do with this weekend.

Yes you are partially right, it could be translation errors due to Japanese and English but Tanabe san was specific in saying assembly of Gasly engine was not good compared to Hartley not the installation.

Honda are known to experiment with slight changes so just to give an example from my side- if the prechamber size is different on both engines it will give different data and different results. Gasly's engine was producing more vibration compared to Hartley type so they decided to continue with Hartley's type till they are able to minimize oscillations.
