I really like this setup direction they've adopted this year. Even if they're not on pole, being faster on the straights gives you a lot of breathing space with the strategy. Easy to overtake, hard to be overtaken.

What I find reall odd is that all those high speed numbers were done on their ultra soft run in Q2. In Q3 they were down 8 kmh on the main straight.

q2 on the left, q3 on the right

Anyone have a clue what's going on here?

That's strange. I'm betting on unsynced telemetry though.

Even if it's unsyched it doesn't mean numbers themselves are incorrect. Speed reading from telemetry overlay always match oficial f1 timing beams, so there's no reason to suspect bogus numbers in this case (or any other for that matter).

But their sector 1 times were faster in Q3, no? So how could it be possible? Unless they're given only one lap of the q3 mode so they chose to use it on getting the car on ultras for the race than getting pole.

They were on HS tire in Q3.

Could different FW settings lead to this?
Edit:
Watched some onboards and Vettel was happy with the FW after his first Q2 run so most likely they didn't change it for Q3.
Edit again:
They have different FW angles for US and HS though.

I meant they might've used the q3 engine mode in q2 to get the car through on ultras for the race.

FW tweak couldn't possibly lead to such differences imo.

That might be the case, but still seems odd why they would do that. It's not like they were on the cusp of being eliminated in Q2.

Concerning engine modes Vettel was in engine 4 in Q1 and in engine 1 in both Q2 and Q3 but I guess there are more settings regarding the highest Q3 mode which are not known.

Could it be as simple as poor exit from the last corner compared to his Q2 run?? why need to go to such lengths as modes and controversies ? :lol:

Poor exit would not affect top speed as much, usually, acceleration more or less tapers off before they reach a top speed. Finish line speed trap should be more telling.

q2: 261 (start) -> 359 (high) -> 263 (finish)
q3: 261 (start) -> 351 (high) -> 263 (finish)

q3: 261 (start) -> 351 (high) -> 263 (finish)
So indeed it seems that it was something with the engine not giving the full beans.

Can be (not saying it is) just as simple as high stickiness/tackiness of the tire. I ride my bike with various compounds and observe the same, soft compounds that have insane grip in the corners also have slightly worse rolling resistance in the same category of tires, reducing the top speed slightly. This is a non issue thought since its laptime (average speed) that matters, not top speed, i do understand the curiosity but don't read to much into the speed trap figures, need alot more parameters to make an educated guess about the cause and effect.
