McLaren MCL34

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

It is a reflection
i don't think it is, because if you watch the autosport car analysis where these stills were taken from you can clearly see it as the camera pans round at arpound 4:50

There's definitely something under the rear wing mainland looking at the video
It's 100% reflection. We get one of these every year, even been fooled myself in the past.

i especially like the part about pat fry and bringing back common sense, since this car seems to have it written all over, they choose their best concepts and copied what others have and incorporated that, thats comon sense to me big time

That square thing ? I wouldn't read too much into it. We'll see if its still there in testing.

I think they've done a good job. Really like how they've taken advantage of the space over the PU, pushed the side pods back and the all the work in the mid-wing area.

Also noticed that they brought back last year's rear suspension (upper A-arms). So all of you that thought it was a problem, McLaren don't agree.

Looks like a reflection of the rear crash structure to me?

Where? The only thing I see is the reflection of the rear crash structure.

Filming day likely to occur after the tests or in-between.

Slightly off topic but is it me or did Ferrari actually followed McLaren's 2018 philosophy of small airbox intake and large sidepod intake?

i dont know about a shakedown, but a mclaren employee mentioned on twitter, what will be important is shakedown or 1st testing day, so :-) the way he mentioned could suggest it was not decided yet,but im sure mclaren will want a very good start to the season, so i think they will have, maybe barcelona saturday or menorca

Even all of us that thought it was a problem said they'd bring it back this year because they'd put too much work into it and would refine it over winter. I'm pretty sure Alonso thought it was a problem when it broke too

If you notice, the geometery is not the same as last year at the front or rear, the rear pullrod is shorter and more steeply angled going forwards to reduce the forces and increase the motion ratio - so I guess Mclaren thought there was some refinement required too

Yes, but nobody was actually able to present evidence that it was a problem. As I said before, it probably is a compromise on mechanical grip, but it also helps clean a lot of the airflow to the back, so for all we know it might be brilliant.
