I wonder if they are trying to put heat in the tires on the first lap or two before settling in on the stint.

Simulates the start of a race if the tyres have been through an aggressive heat cycle then into a long-ish stint.

True, good point. It does appear that they 'come back' a bit after some degradation. Ricciardo said he could bring the laps times back before the end of a stint.

It they had the PU at 90%, maybe it was all they could get ouf the car.

They were also on harder tyres than everyone else did faster laps on.
Autosport says that their fastest time was set on C3 tyres. The same that HAAS and Ferrari used.
Sorry, but you are wrong - VET used a softer tire for his time yesterday. Merc was on the new Medium.
Both, Vettel and Hamilton used C3 yesterday for their fastest laps. Ferrari as well as Mercedes have not used the softer C4 and C5 yet.

Hamilton only used C3 yesterday, he used C2 & C3 today.

Neither Hamilton, nor Bottas used C3 yesterday. They both set their fastest times with C2.

Bottas’ long run pace today was mighty. Think he was using C3.

He had quite a bit of deg on his last stint (see previous page for times) though... not so sure about that.

No, that's not true. Fastest laps on the Ferrari and Mercedes were all done on C3.

There was nothing mighty about long stints today, no matter which team. I think Bottas' longest stint was a 25 laps run on C3, starting at 1:21.5 and ending at 1:23.5 or something. I'm pretty sure the Mercedes doesn't lose 2 seconds pace over 25 laps.
Same goes for all the other stints. Leclerc also started losing half to a full second from lap to lap even though he was just like 6-7 laps into his 12 laps long stint on C3. This can't be true pace.

Depends how much fuel they have on board, and how many laps they tires have already done.

Leclerc keeps Ferrari ahead as Gasly crashes

Charles Leclerc made a succesful debut for Ferrari, as his first full day of testing the new SF90 saw him set the fastest time of the day. Just like Vettel on Monday, he was easily ahead of the competition.
