Funny how everyone is raising the alarm on Merc and questioning their philosophy after first week of testing. Granted they no longer have a PU advantage like the last three years but still they have 600+ workforce that will churn updates daily. If they were to go quali style they can get under 1:16 without doubt. They have resources to turn things around after some practice sessions.
As for the so called pundits claiming Renault are second fastest is just plain ass lazy. Show us the sector times analysis, not the usual bs oh it looks fast and smooth in the corners. What utter garbage of analysis. Even Nico said they still have rear instability from last year.

The W10 currently has balance issues and a very narrow operating window. Seems to it'll be another Diva. Hope once everything is sorted out, it'll fast.

With the freezing non-representative track temps - have to add context to the commentary

Bottas confirming the W10 has potential, but needs drivability issues fixed first:

He's on Mercedes unofficial leaker, that means that rule change is a disadvantage for Mercedes.

Leclerc 18.0 C3.

I think we can say for sure that Ferrari is better
You know how much fuel they were carrying and engine modes they were using? Compared to others?
Don't forget that the softer tires might not even be in the optimal window, not to mention 100 other variables!
If the softer compounds are out of optimal window, then the harder ones are even worse

Yes but it seems that smaller teams have made big progress this year, surprisingly.

OCON said that the new Mercedes is not quite as fast as the old one for now.
But maybe track is one second faster than last year ?
Not so surprising considering the new fron wing rule tends to put the cars closer together in performance, which is great imo.

About the track, it could be faster but it's impossible to know by how much. Though I would be very surprised if 1s is the improvement. More likely on a couple of tenths as a track can't change so much from one year to another with so limited running over the year.

Ted Kravitz.

He's not anywhere to be seen. Rumours are that Sky have sacked him.

I don't think they have. He is just on holiday I bet.

That’d break my heart. His notebooks are usually terrible, but it gives me some f1 related content when I’m fired up after practice/qualifying/race. I hope they don’t try to do the same show with Herbert... uuuugggghhhh

Do teams risk showing their aerodynamic secrets when using flo-vis? :|
Sometimes, and often only partially. The teams are generally quite specific on where and how they use the paint (although not always, I'm looking at you, 2018 Williams) and whilst the outcome on the paint is visible, the combination of factors that has led to it will be more opaque for other teams observing. Like seeing the answer to a complicated formula and only being able to observe some blotches of the working. The answer might be interesting and indicative, but it's difficult to know for sure how it was reached.
I'm sure to the trained "Newey eye" and his contemporaries, they're trying to figuring out what 2018 Williams flo-vis pattern reveals....and whether it's worth pursuing 8)
