Lewis has some time in hand even on that lap, he didn't use all the track he could on the exit of turn 3 & 10.

Overall it looked decent, not as scruffy as some people (press) where claiming.
and also he ran wide in turn 7 and 8
seems like Lewis could have gone even faster
Lewis caught the time back in the final chicane and final corner, just like in 2017

I saw that, it looks like he had an oversteer moment part way through 7. I'm not sure if that was an aero issue, a tail wind/gust, or a mistake on his part.

could be lower temperature, look at the sun light on both runs....lewis was on cooler temperature could have been tyre related

And also Hamilton made nice entry over curb in TURN 11 and as consequence had early and tighter exit from TURN 12. That is also why he was faster in sector 3 from VET. Not only VET misses apex into T11 and into 1st chicane (T14) he even overcommitment after T10 .

Why would you run wide and extend turn 3 if you can easily hold it flat on a tighter line? He did the same on his pole lap last year. As for turn 10, it's not 100% certain going on the kerb is actually faster imo.

You could run wide and carry more speed. You could also run wide but carry the same speed and by opening up the turn put less energy into the tires. Considering C5s really aren't suited for Barcelona putting less energy in them is important.

For turn 10, I'm not saying go up on the kerb. If you look at his pole lat last year you will see he had 65-70% of the car over the line and he barely touched the end of the kerb. In testing he had a lot less car over the line.

Yes, I understand that by having less steering lock you naturally have less tyre scrub and thus can maintain higher speed, but in this particular corner and with these cars (2018-2019) this does not seem to be neccesary and is probably even losing a bit of time with the extra distance you have to take, because the grip is so high there's almost no tyre scrub at the point where normally you'd have to run wide. His pole lap last year more or less confirms this.

Honestly, since we are stuck with them I just wish Pirelli could get their act together and make tires that don't effect the actual racing so much.
Well if you could get the teams to stop changing their car every race, maybe Pirelli would have a chance! :D

not quite right, if you run wider, you can maintain a higher speed before you turn into that corner and you can have a better traction on the exit (earlier on the accelaration) and therefor have a better exitspeed, compared to when you would take the turn shorter, you need to brake earlier for once.
and his pole lap can't really be compared to this years testing, to many things have changed, all the new stuff on the car, the tyre itself, the temperature is different... all things to consider, the whole car behaves differently

Would you rather have graining or blistering?
I like blistering more, to me blistering has more driver management, how fast he goes coming out of the pits... that sort of thing.

Graining just seems like it's gonna happen no matter what.

If we compare just turn 11-15, Lewis' 2019 testing lap is about 0.5s faster than 2018 pole. I remember Toto (or another Mercedes guy) said during the testing that they really made effort to increase the car's ability through slow corners. Looks like Toto wasn't lying.

If the calculations in that video are in fact accurate, then Lewis removed 4 tenths of deficit within a short distance from starting of turn 10 and before turn 14.

Just before Lewis enters turn 10, he was 4 tenths behind and by the time he was taking turn 14, he was on par.

which shows how good that Merc is in the slower corners, and thats backed up by the fact (someone here mentioned) his S3 time was half a second faster than last years pole time!
