Wow, he kept his front right just on the white line for a very intelligent and legal bit of overtaking.

I'm sure that without a puncture Sainz would have been P5 or P6.
Honestly he looked faster than Max, if it wasn't for the puncture they might have even sneaked a podium #-o
I have the same feeling, but that is racing, I hope 3rd time the charm will happen in China for Carlos [-o<

Lando, Great Drive!!! BRAVO =D> =D> =D>
He was setting a purple lap to catch Max (sure benefitted by DRS) but I don’t think McLaren had more pace then Ferrari here. Sainz was just feeling the need to Sainz Max again, he was sacrificing his rubber for that. Just like Baku 2018 Sainz stint 1.

He was faster at that fase, but on harder tyres the Redbull is faster. Overtaking crazy Max would have put him in a battle till the pitwindows and have a negative influence on Carlos race overal. He would have been P5 if he just followed behind.
You don’t know that... Heck, no one knows how the race could have developed... Max may have struggle more in the dirty air of Sainz, they could have sped up their pitstops, placing them in the middle of the pack and having to fight their way through it.

The reality is that Mclaren had the pace to pass the Red Bull’s today... That Sainz made a mistake and put him out of the race for all purposes and that so far with 2 races in, Mclaren has made more progress than most of the field compared to last year, closing the gap to the front.

It's kind of stuff you see in sim racing, reflex avoidance and then stick with it. Great stuff.

I've looked at the start from TV view, and from what I can tell, Norris started decently, Ricciardo got him on the start. In T2 Perez got ahead. This is P11. Now he gets out of sight of cameras and next time we see him he is cutting a corner (Gasly was behind him) and Norris rejoins the track losing several more spots. I believe he was P15 after this (highlights don't show aftermath of the rejoin).

So effectively, Norris is a bit hesitant on the starts, probably because as a rookie he still lacks the confidence in himself and perhaps because he understands race isn't won on the first corner (sim racers know this :D). Falling from P11 to P15 is probably because he was hit by Gasly which forced him off track where he almost spun. Great thing is that Norris was able to fight from P15 back to P6, without safety cars or other kind of "luck".

Question for more knowledgable, did both cars run the exact same spec this race? I've seen that there are pictures of the Australia package with Vype on them, so not sure if this was just in FP1 or did one of the cars (perhaps Norris) run old spec?

I'm not sure it is, Mclaren has shown serious pace on hard tyres since testing.

Bit longer would be more impressive, way he reacted to the "overspeed" and used it to pass him is just great.

I watched race highlights on Youtube, I don't get why they don't add these kind of impressive overtakes. I'm sure there were a bunch more, especially early on. It wouldn't be that much longer and would show how good of a race this was.

Sainz is quick enough, but Lady Luck doesn’t seem to favor him. Norris is impressing me. Both in Oz and here.

It looks like McLaren has the pace to battle for 4th at least.

Correction of my initial start analysis for Norris.

Norris fell back to P11, then managed to overtake Perez on the braking, get alongside Ricciardo only to be hit on the side which caused him to go wide, almost spin out and fall back to P15. Norris was quite lucky, he almost hit the Alfa at that point because Kimi was unstable as well. Close quarters racing.

After that, Lando passed two Toro Rossos by the end of lap 1.

I think the speed of Sainz is even more impressive. Seems to be a couple of tenths quicker at the moment. Norris certainly drove a great race today.
