Magnussen takes a 5-place grid drop. He has changed the gearbox.
Pretty sweet. P5 with an old spec Renault engine. McLaren has made a step ahead of Renault.

It's pretty obvious that Ferrari power was immense this race, Ferrari on pole, Haas P5 and two Alfas P7 and P8.

Kind of annoying that Magnussen was quicker by half a tenth, but the gap behind is not big too. Hopefully the race is better. With Renault not having a good weekend, points will be extra valuable this race.

Also it is so good to see the team being resilient mechanically unlike other teams.

If Lewis gets a grid drop for obstructing Kimi?
Q: (Stefano Mancini – La Stampa) Kimi, will you help Vettel to win his championship this year?
Kimi Raikkonen: I can only drive one car, obviously.

Very Good qualifying. Starting 5th is the best result for MCL. We are up for an exciting race tomorrow. SAI recovery would be interesting to see also.

Could well be 4th tomorrow with the Magnussen gearbox penalty and a potential 3 place grid drop for Hamilton. Great opportunity for points tomorrow.

I like how Norris improves in each session, he was 1:04:361 in Q1, 1:04:211 in Q2 and 1:04:099 in Q3. And remember, this is not the new Renault engine which should give him an edge.

Kimi on other hand would be ahead of MAG and NOR if he put in his Q2 lap in Q3. Same with Gasly, he did a 1:03:988 in Q2 which would put him at P5.

I don't know if it would be a good thing.
Personally i prefer to start 5th on the clean side and Maximize our chances for a clean getaway.
Lewis will pass us either way and if we start 4th we would have RAI on 5th and on the clean side posing an even bigger threat for passing us on lap1.

it is prestige - having cameras looking at a Mclaren in P4 would show the world, and sponsors that Mclaren are on the up. Race pace the Alfas shouldnt be a problem. Swings and roundabouts, but if I was offered P4, I'd take it

If I’m not wrong, Norris’s fast lap in Q2 was aborted because of the Magnussen lock up / off track, right?... So his Q2 time was the first he set (and probably not his fastest)... His Q3 time wasn’t probably the best the car had either.

But regardless, this is a fantastic result for Mclaren... For the past 4 years, this was a track that they dreaded and one of those where the focus was on “race pace” because there was no chance of sniffing Q3.

Also if HAM got 3 place penalty, I think he'd be 5th not Raikonnen. In any case, P5 or P4 doesn't really matter. We are effectively fighting for P6 as Vettel will surely go ahead, Gasly not so sure.

Good point, I forgot about that. Norris was ahead of his best time in Q2 when Haas impeded him.

Kimi is no “chump” though... We could easily get stuck behind him.

As long as tomorrow we have clean getaways at both sides of the track (for Lando and Carlos), we should be in for a very decent race.

Race pace is only shown when you are in free air. if you get stuck behind a Ferrari engine and you can't pass your race pace is destroyed along with your tires. You will be forced to stay a bit back, pit a little bit earlier for the undercut and potentially compromise your strategy. I prefer to start 5th and stay there after lap1. Then we can manage our pace.
If Lewis get 5th though after penalty and RAI stays 6th then its a bit more safe for us.

On Dutch television Robert Doornbos said that Seidl has introduced a small change to the car that improved the aero efficiency a lot. He's normally well informed. This will probably be one of the best signings by Brown.

Good Result by Lando today, P5 after MAG penalty is were we need to be if we want to fight for good points tomorrow. It would be difficult to hold that place since VET will start 9th and I expect by lap 10 VET to be ahead of us, but if we can manage P6\P7 tomorrow with Lando I would be super happy. Also let's not forget SAI has plenty of tires left so he can go with alternate strategy and maybe, just maybe be in the mix as well.
