Pretty sweet. P5 with an old spec Renault engine. McLaren has made a step ahead of Renault.
It's pretty obvious that Ferrari power was immense this race, Ferrari on pole, Haas P5 and two Alfas P7 and P8.

I don't know if it would be a good thing.
If I’m not wrong, Norris’s fast lap in Q2 was aborted because of the Magnussen lock up / off track, right?... So his Q2 time was the first he set (and probably not his fastest)... His Q3 time wasn’t probably the best the car had either.FittingMechanics wrote:I like how Norris improves in each session, he was 1:04:361 in Q1, 1:04:211 in Q2 and 1:04:099 in Q3. And remember, this is not the new Renault engine which should give him an edge.
Kimi on other hand would be ahead of MAG and NOR if he put in his Q2 lap in Q3. Same with Gasly, he did a 1:03:988 in Q2 which would put him at P5.
Good point, I forgot about that. Norris was ahead of his best time in Q2 when Haas impeded him.SmallSoldier wrote: ↑29 Jun 2019, 16:28If I’m not wrong, Norris’s fast lap in Q2 was aborted because of the Magnussen lock up / off track, right?... But regardless, this is a fantastic result for Mclaren... For the past 4 years, this was a track that they dreaded and one of those where the focus was on “race pace” because there was no chance of sniffing Q3.

Kimi is no “chump” though... We could easily get stuck behind him.geogate wrote:it is prestige - having cameras looking at a Mclaren in P4 would show the world, and sponsors that Mclaren are on the up. Race pace the Alfas shouldnt be a problem. Swings and roundabouts, but if I was offered P4, I'd take it
Race pace is only shown when you are in free air. if you get stuck behind a Ferrari engine and you can't pass your race pace is destroyed along with your tires. You will be forced to stay a bit back, pit a little bit earlier for the undercut and potentially compromise your strategy. I prefer to start 5th and stay there after lap1. Then we can manage our pace.
